The MS and TN schools likely have the benefit of being a founding member in
the SEC. If history wasn't on their side, then it is possible that Miss State could be no different than So. Miss. Given that Vandy is viewed as being the token private school in the conference, I'm not sure there is a high expectation in terms of the level of support for their programs. Vandy's alumni do have wealth and you really see the benefits of support in the success Vandy has in the non-revenue sports. However, I am not sure the alumni are as committed to supporting the football program. I suspect we will continue to see Vandy invest in the football program from time to time. However, I doubt it will ever be to the level of what we have seen at Northwestern or to a level that suggests Vandy is committed to building the program to a point where fans expect Vandy to finish in the top half of the SEC year after year. I think most people would agree if the SEC was forming today, then it is possible (maybe even likely) that Miss State and Vandy wouldn't be members in the SEC.
