I'd say you vastly overestimate how well presidents know each

other due to athletic conference connections...and/or how much they care about that association. Presidents (or Provosts or deans or whatever) are familiar with one another for all sorts of reasons, most of them having nothing to do with sportsball. If Sands or whatever VT official calls PSU or UGa tomorrow, it's not going to matter that we're in different athletic conferences. (well, unless it's actually about athletics...lol) Anyone's willingness to talk to VT about academic initiatives would have everything to do with what the initiative is and what their perception of VT is in that area, and nothing to do with conference affiliation.
