My son got a scholarship for mechanical engineering at
Nebraska. He had offers from Purdue, Trine, Toledo, and partials from a few others. VT was one he looked at really hard, and it wasn't because of football. He never applied, but this family rates VT's academics up there with most of this board. At one time, we had one at Nebraska, one at KU, one at K-State, and the 4th I told, any school but Missouri. He is a finish carpenter today, and didn't cost us a dime.
The point is, you don't have to sell me on VT's academics. I went to school in the Boston area when BC actually had a team with Flutie. I didn't go to BC, but at the time, I was an avid Big East fan, even though the rest of my family went to school in Indiana (3 different Universities, but not ND).
Currently, the only way a non blue blood is going to be invited to the P2, is to buy their way in - whether through 2-3 national championships in the next 4 years, or the SMU, Oregon route. VT is a football brand, but not a blue blood. Win a Natty or 2, and you would be more attractive then Clemson IMO. Until then, we are all hanging on by our fingernails.
Currently, ALL of the ACC and ALL of the B12 have a realistic pathway to get a natty - but it will come down to money unfortunately. KU, TT, and a few schools in the B12 have the money to buy one, but as we all know, it's not that easy.
You got the coach, now get the quarterback.
