It is worth noting that NoCal has several good/great HS football programs
De La Salle (Concord), Serra (San Mateo), St. Francis (Mountain View), Rocklin (Rocklin), Folsom (Folsom), Pittsburg (Pittsburg), Valley Christian (San Jose), Central (Fresno), Buchanan (Clovis), Edison (Stockton), etc. to name a few. I could easily see Notre Dame wanting to play a game in NoCal because it would give the assistant coaches an opportunity to watch potential recruits in action while the team is in the area for a game. Given that Notre Dame recruits nationally, the coaching staff may have to utilize the killing of two birds with one stone whenever they have the opportunity because their time on the recruiting trail is limited during the season.
It is one thing for VT coaches to drive to NOVA, 757, or Charlotte to watch a couple Friday night games in person and still have plenty of time to drive back to get ready for a Saturday home game. While Notre Dame coaches may have to rely more on flying as their preferred mode of transportation because they have to cover a greater distance in the same amount of time. Hence why I think they may utilize checking out nearby recruits more during away games than a program that may recruit more regionally. This logic may even help explain why the Shamrock Series and Navy's home game are typically played at a neutral site. FWIW this year's Shamrock Series game against BYU is being played in Las Vegas this year. It is worth noting that the Las Vegas area has several good/great HS teams, so I would expect to see a couple assistant coaches at those games the night before. Notre Dame's other neutral site game is Navy's home game in Baltimore. I would expect the assistant coaches to attend HS games in Baltimore, DC, and maybe NOVA the night before for the same reason.
