I've been around VT since 1989

I've got 10 years/3 degrees as a student and 7 as an employee, teaching and administrative, since then. I worked in admissions during the initial the rise of VT football. Guess what? Applications were already on the rise before we became "someone" in football. Then the MNC run did give us a significant bump—for a year or two, after which we returned to being right on the previously-established trend. VT has changed for the better in many ways. It's not because of football or conference memberships. It really is just athletics. VT going P2, ACC, neutered ACC, B12, whatever, isn't going to be a big deal for VT the academic institution.
