Phil Lynott got kicked out of Skid Row by Brush Shiels. Shiels wanted a power trio (ZZ Top is power trio most would know) and Lynott was the 4th man out as the vocalist. Gary Moore (legendary British rock guitarist) was the lead guitarist in Skid Row and took Lynott under his wing after he was kicked out, teaching Lynott how to play bass. Lynott took his bass playing and formed Thin Lizzy around it. becoming a big international rock band. Greg Rolie & Neal Schon left Santana to form Journey. Rolie & Schon left after Santana's 4th album. The first three Santana records are hard rock must haves. However there was always a battle within that band early on between members wanting hard rock and others that wanted the Latin tinged jazz. Carlos himself favored the jazz. By the 4th record, those wanting the jazz had won out. That is why Schon & Rolie left. Of course Santana went on to have great commercial success with the jazz tinged records. Journey was also a huge band in popularity back then. Correct, a book could be written on these bands that shuffled members for the betterment of music & otherwise. Anthony was just a little odd due to his decades in Van Halen during their glory years to be dumped in their twilight.
