I agree they aren't really "conferences" anymore even if "conference" is in

the name. FWIW the ECAC (East Coast Athletic Conference) is probably an even better example of how these super conferences can function. I say that because JMU was a member of the ECAC in the '70s and early 80s. During its peak years, the ECAC had DI, DII, and DIII members in a variety of sports the conference sponsors. Currently, I believe the ECAC is only a DII and DIII conference, but it might sponsor a non-revenue sport or two at the DI level. Under the AFL vs. NFL scenario, the conferences would really function more like the divisions. However, in my example I was thinking the conference structure could resemble how things were during the pre-BCA Era. Each conference would have its own bylaws to give the schools flexibility to embraces the differences (i.e., Big Ten wants to maintain its rigid academic standards) that may not be possible in the AFL vs. NFL scenario. At least the Big Ten (Division) couldn't have its own bylaws that differs from the the Southeast (Division) under the AFL vs. NFL scenario because in that scenario that should be 1 giant entity instead of multiple entities.
