What you're describing is exactly what ESPN Plus basically is now, at least for college football and basketball, if you're in the American or the Sun Belt. You're not on broadcast at all, the school produces the video, and sometimes (but not all the time) ESPN will send a commentary crew. If they don't, then the school has to put up a commentary crew for the stream as well. Ultimately, the "ACCN" is just going to be another basket of content you select off of a giant menu on a streaming app. The same goes for the SECN and the BTN. They won't be linear cable networks anymore. The big difference is going to be that people will have to actually choose to pay for the content, as opposed to the payment being expressed as a carriage fee bundled in with the rest of their cable bill. They will be like another streaming service you have to pay for. To be clear, I think where we're going here is that folks will have to pay extra, on top of a base ESPN subscription fee, for full access to conference content. Example - your Mississippi State game might be with the base ESPN content this week because they're playing LSU, but it might not be next week when they're playing Missouri - if you want access to that game, you have to pay the $7.99 extra a month for the SEC package. That's what's coming. It's going to hit the SEC and the Big 10 as well, but it's going to hit the ACC worst, because, at the risk of beating a dead horse here, the majority of ACC schools have no fan base, football or otherwise. Once that's the case, the entire revenue model goes right out the window, because stakeholders will have to actively convince people to subscribe to the content. Do you think people are going to be lining up in droves to pay extra money so they can get extra SMU, Syracuse, Wake Forest, Boston College, and Pitt games that would otherwise be locked behind a paywall? That's the coming problem for the ACCN and its ability to generate revenue. And, clearly, ESPN knows this...they treat the ACC like an afterthought in every way one can think to do so. If you think I'm making all that up, just go back and look at the deal Apple offered the PAC right before it imploded. That deal is the way of the future, because linear cable is on its very last fumes. Pretty much everyone I know exclusively uses streaming apps, unless their apartment complex pays for a cable subscription or some similar deal. The only folks I know right now that independently pay for cable packages are my 92 and 94 year old grandmothers.
