The travel would be more of a pain-
but, frankly, I think every VT sport would be more interesting in the current iteration of the XII than that of the ACC. If Miami and NCSU ended up in the XII with VT, even more so. And, if the money is the same, or better, why would VT want to stay on what is very obviously a sinking ship? I'd bet dollars to donuts that it won't be long, relatively speaking, before the ACC resembles the late-era Big East, taking on G5 programs at fire sale to replace those departing for elsewhere. Nobody should be shocked to see a USF, JMU, and/or Appalachian State in the ACC at some point in the future, unless the conference just completely implodes and the brand is allowed to die, which I don't see happening.
Thought experiment - Besides UVA, which gets steamrolled almost every year and has only won one football contest vs. VT in 20 seasons, who are VT's traditional rivals in the ACC? What opposing ACC program really gets you pumped up to see VT play on a fall Saturday morning? I'm sure FSU and Clemson immediately come to mind, but Clemson pre-2012 was a journeyman program at best, FSU has been mediocre or bad the majority of seasons since VT joined the ACC, until recently, VT never played either regularly, because they were in the Atlantic division, and both appear to believe they're a lock for P2 membership anyway, given the lawsuits. Perhaps UNC? That "rivaly" has been a mostly one-sided affair in favor of VT, and I think more people detest them than view them as an actual rival. I'd be surprised if anyone dotes over Pitt, BC, or Syracuse just because of the Big East Football Conference history. The U is basically it, and I don't think they're in a much better position than VT when it comes to P2 realignment, if they are at all. Frankly, the best thing to happen to the U in the past 20 years has been the ESPN 30 for 30 features.
