Expenses have to be managed

Obviously, you want to try to schedule in a way that manages the long east-west travel hops. But I see no way to compete unless the top unaffiliated eastern schools join up with those in the midwest and far west. Football and basketball can manage that kind of travel. Olympic sports can be scheduled on a more regional basis, for the most part.
