Wake and Duke and Kansas are fine schools that have some good programs, but none fits the profile for big-time football - any recent success notwithstanding. We do not need schools that draw 20,000 to football games. This is why UVa and Pitt are borderline for inclusion in the league I have in mind. People watch the SEC because whether it is Alabama or South Carolina, LSU or Mississippi State, Florida or Kentucky, there is almost always a good crowd in the stands and the passion of a large segment of a broad region behind both teams. No so for Duke and Wake, and it will never be so. Baylor has terrific football and basketball these days. But Baylor is not the type of school I prefer my school to associate with, nor does its athletic department employ standards consistent with that to which I expect most of our peers in the ACC would subscribe. As for Stanford, it's just a different place. I would welcome Stanford, even though it has attendance issues and will have a hard time competing in the future. I just don't see Stanford wanting to join any big-time football league other than the Big Ten.
