If conferences truly wanted their members to play the same schedule in a

sport, then they would have never expanded beyond 8 or 9 members. The fact they have expanded well beyond that number tells me the additional money is worth more to them than making all members play the exact same schedule every year. Another potential motivation to these mega conferences is they are a means to an end. If the P2s grow large enough, then it may make it easier for them to either break away from the NCAA or form their own division level within the NCAA and not have to worry about any political pressures from Congress or the state politicians for leaving other schools within their state behind. Once the separation is complete, then there would be nothing to prevent the P2s from breaking up into smaller more regionalized conferences. Particularly if the schools decide to enter into a CBA with the student-athletes so they can negotiate the media rights for the entire group instead of at the conference level. Depending on how many conferences are formed, I guess there is even the possibility that conferences or the schools could still be able to negotiate regional contracts similar to what you currently see in MLB, NBA, and NHL.
