I've been going to VT games since I was a freshman in 1973, and...
...finding a hotel in Blacksburg on game weekends has been an issue for at least that long. You basically have to make your reservations as soon as the schedule comes out. And, as pointed out, some require a 2 night minimum. Not to mention they all jack up their prices to predatory levels.
If the drive to Roanoke doesn't work for you, try searching Christiansburg. The towns are adjacent and it's only a 15 minute drive or a relatively inexpensive Uber ride.
