The problem is, that it isn't just about the athlete money. It's jobs

Lots and lots of jobs across the athletic department and local communities. And lots of businesses in the college communities rely on those athletic events to generate revenue. It's all too connected now to just let it unravel. Just look at the expenses for VT. Admin compensation, travel, game expenses, facilities all translate into economic impact. College sports has become too big to fail.
