Assuming this is accurate, saying no 3 times was the right call at the time

The path to a potential championship was (and is) much easier, and there was no crazy gap in revenue between the conferences. As demonstrated by the ridiculous realignment we've seen recently, this is all about money. If the SEC determines that adding Virginia Tech will result in more money, then they will try to make it happen.
