I think it was reported somewhere that WVU reached out to SEC in 2003

And the Mountaineers were rebuffed. Of course, I may be making that up. If I am right, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Virginia Tech officials did the same thing and had a similar experience. I would be shocked if any hard evidence ever surfaces indicating that we turned down an invitation to the SEC at any point in time. But particularly in 2003 it seemed clear that the ACC was the only option we had other than remaining in the Big East.
