In a battle with fruit flys. Never had this before. Advice (short of fire)?

Decaying fruit is their thing. Mix up a little wine/vinegar/fruit juice/sugar.......dilute with water and add a drop of dish soap...couple ounces in a wine glass or similar. You'll catch most of them in the first night.
