Visited High Point and Davidson yesterday/today. My goodness, High Point is
is insane. That place is like a resort. Forget sending my daughter to college there...I want to go there. Dorms are like nice hotel rooms, all the buildings are modern and upscale with grand entrances and chandeliers, labs and classrooms are very nice and new, food was delicious....they have 3 upscale restaurants (Mediterranean, Steakhouse, and Japanese) that are included as part of the meal plan (limit once a week....parents can eat for $65), fountains and firepits everywhere. Just everything you could think of, they have it. It's now jumped to #1 on my daughters list of schools. And like they say on their website, parents number 1 question when they take the tour is, "When can I move in?"
Davidson....meh. I get that the have high academic standards and that's clearly what they hang their hat on. Nothing really impressive on the campus tour. Food options, even according to our tour guide, kinda suck and are the same every day. Old buildings...they wouldn't show us a dorm...but this is what really worried me: I asked about male and female dorms and he said it's kinda random. Some dorms are mixed. But then....then...he said to us parents and students something like this: "There is an option if you request it to stay in a (not his exact wording) drug and alcohol free dorm...you know, if that's not something you want to be around....but you know, it is college and students like to have fun." WTF?

and I had the same impression on HPU...it was like a resort. But I was turned off and so was my son. It felt like a cult. We toured an academic building during an 8 am class and all the students were dressed nicely (girls in dresses, boys in khakis and polos). My son thought that was really wierd. And so did I. It was wondering when the Kool Aid was going to be distributed.
He chose VT....and boy am I glad.

And what does your daughter want to study? There is a thread on the conference realignment board about the financial pain that private universities face in the coming years. Unless High Point offers a unique degree that your daughter can't find in-state, I would be somewhat concerned about paying for out-of-state tuition at a ritzy school right now...

When factoring in room, dining, and other expenses, the gross annual cost of attendance is around $67,000 to $70,000 before financial aid or scholarships

Is your daughter's preferred major available anywhere that is more affordable?
And you just taught me something...I never thought about the fact that private schools charge the same for all students regardless of their state of residence, but that makes sense.

something like that. And yes, there are other colleges that offer that. But there are other factors...she does not want a big school, so no VT (although we are visiting UVA on Monday because a program she's looking at at Longwood would have her doing 2 years at Longwood and one final year at UVA and getting a Masters in 3 yrs). She wants small class sizes, a community feel, and other things.
She will/should get quite a bit off in scholarships for her academics, so that will help. But so far our top list (in order) is
1. High Point
2.Milligan U
3. Longwood
4. Liberty
5. ?
