The opposite is arguably the most versatile player on the team. He/she must be able to set, hit, and play defense.

The libero is the newest position, created 25-30 years ago and is intended to be a purely defensive player. The libero wears a different colored jersey from everyone else and can substitute for any player at any time but cannot attack the ball.

The setter almost always touches the ball second in any possession. It is his/her job to take the first hit and put the ball where teammates can go on the offensive.
