live a bit in The Great Depression and WWII --in order to tuffen me up and make me appreciate things more...
He just said: "No."
So I said: "Really, why? I thought you'd like that idea?"
He said it was: "...just too much." and that he would never want anyone to have to live through that.
(Still yet; you could not unring that bell with him-- when you are starving... and fighting... you stay THIN in about any/all thinning ways subsequent to that until your grave. Again, some bells can never be unrung).

and he would never speak about the war, too many bad memories watching them die on the beach.
My father's father was in the Pacific and would tell some just brutal stories.
I had a female friend who was in school during that time. Very few men came back and many of them had alcohol problems, etc. Tough for the women to find a decent man their age. It greatly distressed her all her life.

Church; (Orthodoxy), the Clergy are taught to hear Military Confessions; 'differently'.
Meaning fighting/killing is well beyond unNatural. Worst of the worst.
(i.e., Humans are not made for that... and it really daunting to unmake that Soul...)
So, yah... she raised a tuff statistical point... now consider Eastern Blocs who ran outta men (too many had died) and you see the unNatural ante spiral even worse... war=sucks. Hate it.
