First day of ocean lifeguard training for my kid……
About 70 trainees from all over the state were present in Huntington Beach this morning. Kicked off with another round of fitness testing. 1000yd swim under 20 min and 200yd/400yd/200yd run/swim/run in under 10 mins. I’d guess about 10 people were eliminated right off the bat. My kid passed. So far so good….

Did my initial certifications at NAS Oceana Officer’s Club Pool, with Navy SEAL as instructor.
Absolutely brutal. He seemed to gain much pleasure playing the part of a panicking drowner who required rescue.

Rock rescues due to outcroppings of rock that are about 100 yards off the beach that people love to swim to and then can't figure out how to safely get back to the beach. Issues with sea life such as stingrays. Rip currents pose a significant problem. Also, neck and back injuries due to shorebreak conditions. There is also the large bodied tourist issue along with the occasional panga boat loaded with folks from other countries.

Would guess anyone who does triathlons wouldn't have any issues doing the fitness test.

But he came in in middle of pack which is fine. Everyone who was there had to already have passed this testing to get accepted into training. It was therefore surprising to see some folks struggle. One guy got through the finish line and promptly puked. Another was looking so wiped that one of the instructors was yelling at him as to whether he needed medical attention. Kudos to the 48 yo guy from Santa Barbara with a total dad bod that beat my kid out of the water. I talked to the guy for a couple of minutes and he told me that he was a lifelong surfer and lifeguarding was his retirement plan.

sports, if they didn’t hurl at the end of their fitness runs, they were pussies.
