He only told me the story once, which was odd considering he talked nonstop. He took out 3 machine gun nests. When they were finally able to inspect those nests, it turned out they were "manned" by women. He said after that, all his buddies called him a real "lady killer." He was a real character. He seemed to know everyone in VB. He was head of his teamsters union and had leadership roles in the marine alumni association (or whatever it's called). He also used to lecture me on how waking up at noon in the summer, then riding my bike to the beach was not something the marines taught him would work in life. He took being a valuable contributor to his community seriously. He passed a couple years ago. Because of him and the stories my father-in-law (navy) told me about the WWII pacific campaign, I've always loved marines.
