I learned a lot about ocean travel to Europe in the last year

Ships take the "great circle route" to Europe, which can take them through the Arctic Circle. The Coast Guard monitors iceberg location to provide guidance on safe routes through this area. Insurance companies require a certain distance from icebergs for ocean vessels. There is an astronomical cost savings for every nautical mile N that can be safely gained. The Coast Guard spends a lot of time and effort in understanding where icebergs are.
