Don't know about the Bacon bit (haha), but yes.

Confederate snipers were about 800-1,000 yards away firing Whitworth rifles, and the Union troops were hesitant to move forward. "What? Men dodging this way for single bullets? What will you do when they open fire along the whole line? I am ashamed of you. They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." Seconds later he was killed by a bullet below the eye. Helluva shot at 800-1,000 yards.
