I love Mark Knopfler, and have a number of solo works by him, but

His solo career lagged behind his success with Dire Straits. Michael Jackson almost HAS to be the answer. He DID leave the Jackson 5 and was the king of pop. I love Paul McCartney too, but he didn’t leave the Beatles so much as they died a natural death and he continued creating and performing. Phil Collins, and the rest of Genesis, were doing solo stuff while still doing Genesis, at least for awhile. Stevie Nicks was never as successful for the time period as Fleetwood Mac. And while Ritchie was very successful solo, not moreso than most of the others.
