My thoughts....you are trying to do two things at once. Can you try to

focus on just house breaking him? If you don't have a confined yard, then buy a small temporary fence to use and if he's outside, always put him in it or walk him on a leash. When he's inside either put him on a leash or restrict him to a small area that is his to keep him from pooping in "his area". This will take a lot of work, but you can;t let him win this battle. Don't give up and be absolute about not giving in to him. But don't punish, only reward when he poops outside. That's all I got.
