water heaters require an expansion tank, the installation of which, is best left to the professionals. You should be fine going thru HD or Lowe's for plumbing installs. Also, since you mentioned gas, if you haven't already researched tankless water heaters, you might want to consider that as an option; its more fuel efficient than a standard tank. Rinnai & Navien are reputable brands. Rheem is another brand, but I don't have personal experience with it.
