Not sure if tug boats would have had any impact if they were accompanying the ship, but given the things I've seen published that are just silly, I'd want to see some insight from someone with an understanding of the physics involved before thinking it mattered. It's one thing to push the boat against a pier or pull it out, another thing entirely to stop or redirect it when it's in motion.
