My kids learned it all the hard way and have thrived

We homeschooled. They all learned the hard way and had to memorize multiplication tables, do skip counting, long division, all of it beaten into their heads. They all took math in High School from Veritas. Middle kid has an MS in ME and graduated Magna cum Laude and was the outstanding ME grad student in his class. Youngest is getting her MS in some branch of psychology that is all testing and statistics. Oldest went into the USMC and ended up teaching most of his platoon how to use the protractor and do the math for land nav. At SOI, they made him teach the Assaultman math on weekends so they could pass their book tests. All three have thanked up profusely for pushing them so hard in math because it's incredibly practical. I've tutored kids in what is supposed to be a great school system, but I can tell you they don't know anything practical.
