Nationally, people are more likely to remember VT's losses to Kansas in the Orange Bowl, Stanford in the Orange Bowl, unranked Georgia in the CFA Bowl, UCLA in the Sun Bowl, Michigan in the Sugar Bowl, at LSU, losing to Miami at home when MV2 was QB, Boise St at FedEx, and other similar marquee losses than VT's marquee wins during that same time period. The reason people may not care if VT was blown away is because VT didn't make the most of its opportunity when it was ESPN's darling. VT had momentum coming off the MNC game against FSU and beating Clemson in the 2000 Gator Bowl, but ended up squandering that window of opportunity before having to deal with the end of the Beamer Era. The worst part about it is that window of opportunity was about 10 years (maybe longer) which was more than enough time for a program to take that next step towards eventually becoming a blue blood program. Heck Boise St made the most of its opportunity and had a nice run before it returned to reality.
