when they were first hired. I recall fans thinking the transition between a legacy coach like Beamer & his replacement couldn’t have gone any better that first year. They loved how Fuente honored Beamer’s legacy by allowing a player with a good game to wear Beamer’s jersey the following week. Fuente walked on water his first season because he took us to the ACCCG where we gave CU, the eventual National Champs, a very tough game. If Fuente who brought Jared Evans w/him had been able to convince Evan’s to play his senior season, Fuente’s tenure might’ve had a whole different outcome but at least his honeymoon period would’ve lasted longer. Evans was our last great QB & when he opted to “go pro” our QB cupboard was left bare & things went south quickly for Fuente afterwards. When Pry was hired everyone was convinced Pry was a better cultural fit than Funte & happy that VT had made a substantial budget increase for both Pry & his staff. Pry didn’t have a magical first season like Fuente but everyone blamed that on Fuente leaving the cupboard bare so Pry’s honeymoon lasted about as long as Fuente’s, which was up until the first lose or two of his second season. They even gave Pry an extra off season to fix the problems because they liked his personality better than Fuentes. It’s funny how a coach’s W-L record ultimately affects his likability and the athletic director’s, too. I’m pretty sure both Fuente’s & Pry’s complete coaching staffs came with not just Whitt’s but the entire board of directors approval so anyone who thinks this next hire will be better, I guess really believes in the saying “the third times the charm”. Personally, I believe the only thing that will fix the product VT is putting on the field, is a much bigger NIL Budget as compared to other schools. Right now we might get lucky & find an under the radar Michael Vick or Bruce Smith but given the portal, neither player would stick around for year two. How much did we have to scramble to pay our current QB enough to make sure he returned? I’m not knocking his play but we all know he’s not Michael Vick.
