Don't have time to address your larger point, but this line jumped out.

"The fact I knew this game was most likely over for us when we took a touchdown lead with 4 minutes left speaks to the conditioning." Never mind conditioning. I literally thought, "Now, don't screw it up and give it away." And they did. I was in the corner of the end zone, surrounded by VT fans, and after the hysterical celebration of the long TD by Jennings to go up 27-20, there was mostly resignation and just observation. It was like we all knew what was coming. The 15-second-long three-and-out didn't even draw consternation and ire, just a "here it comes" attitude.
