I work with a lot of families on planning
Also I have several kids who have played sports.
I often illustrate for some of our families the economics of sports costs versus scholarships.
Most college sports are a negative return on investment when weighing participation costs against scholarships.
I know two things for sure from these exercises:
-generally a good student gets much more aid than a good athlete in a non revenue sport.
- good student and good athlete is your best combination.
Athletics can build character, create well rounded individuals and teach life lessons. If you kid enjoys the sport thats great. Or if sports helps them get into or afford a better school. But don’t chase athletic scholarships solely as a financial decision.
