Well, he was a starter here, not a backup.

Young probably told him that he would have to go back to being a backup next year. Remember, he started 28 of 32 games this year, and 16 of 34 as a freshman. So he's been a starter because of issues with Rodney Rice and Darius Maddox, by necessity. He's basically started for the entirety of the last 1.5 seasons. So he views himself as a starter, while Mike Young views him as a valuable rotational piece off the bench who only starts when bad things happen with the regular starters. Young was honest with him about his future role, and Collins chose to pursue a course where he had a better chance to continue to be a starter. That's my take.
