self-scout. Difficult to evaluate many facets of the program when you are practicing against each other every single day. These games provide an opportunity to see what sets work best, how players react to new situations, what rotations are most effective, and perhaps what freshmen should redshirt or not (probably not important for VT this year). I don't see how playing to win accomplishes any of that. You win a game that doesn't count but don't really accomplish anything with respect to winning the games that do count.
