Honestly this view feels myopic and is grasping at a “gotcha”
We hired MY because he was an absolutely perfect fit for what VT needed in 2019, a program builder with a defined track record of success on incredibly lean resources who had a penchant for coaching beautiful basketball. Coming into a team that was EXACTLY how you describe MYs weaknesses, built for a 1 year peak and completely gutted following that 1 year.
He came in and was wildly successful with the kinds of players he was used to coaching. Guys who weren’t top recruits that were willing to be coached, has no major egos, and were willing to put the work in. Remember VT is the gum on the bottom of college basketballs shoe, there is no history of success whatsoever here. He made 2 tournaments and has been a bubble team consistently.
The concern around “talent” acquisition has torpedoed him. You can’t ask a guy who coaches ego-free ball to all of sudden replace “his” guys with “your” guys and expect the same results. We had good results with poor recruiting, we’ve since gotten average results with the best recruiting we’ve had since Greenberg. MY can recruit, the real question to ask is should he?
In a world where we are at the bottom of the pecking order when it comes to NIL, do you really want to be bringing in guys who will jump at their first pay raise? Fire MY and hire an AAU coach for all I care, they’ll certainly feed the egos.
Bottom line is MY was a play for sustained success with minimal resources. If the resources aren’t changing then take the MY approach, if they are coming dump him and play NBA style basketball.
Whatever you do, don’t ask him to be someone he’s not and complain about the results. Theres plenty of recruiting star talent on this team compared to 2019-2021, I doubt we’d be seeing much more success with another coach.
Player retention sucked this year because the admin didn’t deliver on their promises, bottom line. If we aren’t going to fulfill obligations to players, don’t expect them to stick around.

No it's not. Laid out nicely and not myopic nor is it grasping at a gotcha

Mark asked how he was going to improve shooting. Asked him for suggestions.

Add to that, Cassell - especially an empty Cassell - doesn't hold much
