Would be pretty difficult to say Justyn Mutts and Rodney Rice aren't high level athletes Not a ton of athletes matriculate to Blacksburg without extenuating circumstances. And when one does, they come with flaws in the skill department. Because if you have high level skill and high level athleticism, you don't go to Virginia Tech. So MY has a conundrum...do you take flawed athletes and hope to teach them offense? Or do you take highly skilled players who are overlooked for their athleticism and scheme the game to work in your favor? There's an argument to be made for both, but what you CANT do is be in purgatory between the two. You have to choose an identity and stick with it. The gripe with Greenbergs teams were always inconsistency. He got some athletes that other teams stopped recruiting due to character issues (Marquie Cooke, Justin Holt, Jeff Allen, Montrezl Harrell, etc). Guess what? Questionable character breeds inconsistency. The gripe with Buzz's teams were they were small and lacked depth. He got some athletes by cheating his balls off, and there's only so many players you can do that for when funds are limited. So guess what, your teams are small (because post players who are able to be bought aren't coming to VT) and your depth consists of players who went on to Longwood, San Diego and UT-San Antonio The gripe with MY is athleticism, but it is by far the most sustainable strategy to long term success in Blacksburg. Buzz didn't give two sh**s about long term success, so he simply bit the depth bullet. The good news is the two incoming recruits are both athletic AND skilled. VT got one because he was gar outshadowed by his two higher ranked teammates. VT got the other because of perceived health issues and an opportune time for a hometown school to pass for someone else. Tyler Johnson is killing it this year. Even with 2 perceived "better" recruits on his team, he is showing out as the prize of the bunch.
