Yep, that clinched it again. We are the DUMBEST team in D1…no doubt now
Cooke should be given a week off for that nonsense. Another cardinal rule broken….NEVER, EVER TURN YOUR BACK TO THE BASEBALL WHEN YOU KNOW WHERE ITS COMING FROM….I continue to see dumb play but that takes the cake WTF?????????????? ** Edited by Will Stewart at 4/11/2026, 5:21:31 PM

Just a poorly coached program in all aspects, really bad.
Outfielders misplayed 3 fly balls, CF missed cutoff man 3 times, poor baserunning, never taking the extra base, attempting bunts yet again. Meanwhile Bc executing in all phases, well coached lesser talented team.

There’s that continuing theme again, COACHING…it matters but Cooke’s
Mistakes were both mental (his lack of awareness) and coaching itself. Clearly, fundamentals aren’t being correctly installed.

At this point in a college baseball player's career ....
... is it necessary to teach something THAT fundamental? It's a serious question. Coach is trying to teach his players how to win games in the ACC, not how to properly run the bases like they're in little league. Any moment spent teaching something that a player should know by 6th grade is a moment wasted at high level college baseball. I'm sure that Szefc and the assistant coaches were floored that that even happened and never considered it to be a possibility. This is basic stuff.

My viewpoint as a parent of a HS player
Very little teaching of fundamentals at any level. My son gets to play at this level because he has a coach at 11 and 12 who was old school tough and taught them stuff. But almost everyone in town hated this coach. But he can do things mentally most kids his age have no idea. Unfortunately he gets overlooked because he's not a physical monster. Starting really early, the coaches just get the biggest strongest kids they can. Travel teams maybe practice once a week, and it is mostly hitting and how they can maximize exit velocity. Not how the game was taught to me. I still believe in fundamentals and basebally things. But the machine does not teach it.

Thanks for the answers.
You guys follow the team closer than I do, and your answers aren't about this specific play. They are about patterns and accountability over a long period of time. All good points.

Of course not - it is all about leadership and accountability
We had guys not running full speed thinking a play was over and were thrown out as a result, on multiple occassions today, is that coaching? ….absolutely. Is guys not hitting cutoff man coaching? Yes! Basic stuff, but this series really highlights the issue, stark contrast to BC. That stuff is acceptable in this program, and very clearly not at BC.

Great, fair points Will….but this stuff keeps occurring. During the Duke
Series, Ethan Ball (who I think is a budding star), left early on a fly ball, attempting to run to third. When he was called out (for leaving early) his reaction was that of disbelief…like he didn’t seem to understand that leaving the base before the fielder catches the ball is a no no. Today there were several examples of this….FUNDAMENTALS not being applied; missing the cut off man (2x), inability to get down a bunt….i could go on. Viewed in isolation, it wouldn’t be a concern. When applied collectively, one is left with the WTF moment again, and again. Cooke seems like a talented kid who gets complacent from time to time, but today’s mental error reeked of simultaneous ‘lack of effort, and nonchalant attitude’, which appears pervasive to me. I can’t think how this eventuality doesn’t come down to basic coaching skills, and setting the ‘tone’? Either way, something is missing.

You ask a fair and logical......
question IMO. That question, again IMO, triggers a host of other questions but, I am not sure at this time whether it is productive to ask them. I think a lot of people have reached the point of just wondering what is going on and how/if it can be fixed by those present.

In the basic Box Score, there should be a column for bonehead plays
Or just count them as Errors. 12 Hits for each side, an Error for BC, no Errors for VT? Bull. By the way, Live Stats people. We are NOT 16-17 in the ACC. ** Edited by HokieNL at 4/12/2026, 12:29:20 AM
