Micah Matthews: 2025 Elite 2-Sport Recruit
Some of you may be aware there is a very special potential 2025 recruit, named Micah Matthews, announcing his commitment on July 10th. He is both a coveted football and baseball athlete. He's the #5 ranked football athlete in Virginia, and his baseball skills maybe even more special: He's unanimously ranked in the top 100 for his HS class across all the major sites:
#66 by Perfect Game
#54 by Baseball America
Baseball America's scouting report states that he is a "a power/speed threat in center field if everything clicks.".
He's from Virginia, and unless you've been living under a rock you're probably aware that Pry and the football staff have been raking in the local talent. Football is likely a major pull for us right now with Matthews, and hopefully it's enough to land him. He's looking to play both sports seriously, which would be very exciting as a fan.
This would be one of the biggest baseball recruits for Tech that I can remember. Getting him to campus may still present a challenge even if he commits to Tech, given he will most certainly get draft looks in the Rule 4 next year. Right now the favorites to land him are VT, UNC, UVA, and Utah.

if he is a Top 100 HS baseball prospect there is always the possibility he could be drafted. Lots of guys have attended college to play football over the years then played minor league baseball in the summer.

was baseball. In a TSL article from June of this year...he said he is 50/50 on which sport he would ultimately choose.
The main thing to watch is whether he continues to be a Top 100 recruit in baseball. If he continues to be ranked in that range and he shows promise as a baseball prospect, there is a decent chance of him getting drafted and choosing to go pro out of high school.
If he does make his way to Blacksburg, then I could see if playing both as a freshman and then evaluating his long-term prospects in both sports at that time.

That was Tyler Dean and he was #98 by Perfect Game in the 2021 class.
The only other Top 100 recruits we've had since 2009 according to Perfect Game were Mason Albright (#42 in 2021), Nick Morabito (#99 in 2022) and Blake Dickerson (#56 in 2023). All three of them were drafted and never made it to VT.
So if Matthews remained Top 100 and were to somehow not get drafted in a slot he felt good about and we somehow secured his commitment, he would likely be considered our best baseball recruit in the last 15 years if not going back further.

I've been a bit busy so it was difficult to look back and figure that out. THANK YOU
Side note I got to see Nick Morabito play up in Brooklyn with the Mets' High-A team. He's got the hit tool and seems to be quite athletic. Tough to judge fielding of an OF without seeing a ton of fly balls, which there weren't many of. I'm rooting for him. Always a Hokie!
