If 1947 is accurate about why Huff left Marshall,,,,"At marshall he got...
...he got into it with the AD, who wouldnt give him the money he needed.", why in the world would you expect him to come to VT?? We've got an unfunded, unrealistic (at least at this point) and unconvinced BOV (still waiting on the BOV "response" to the Babcock smoke and mirrors presentation). None of that bodes well for recruiting Huff or anyone other than another second tier P5 or junior P2 coach to Blacksburg.

Related to @great2bahokie and @RiverVT replies, you DO realize the Pres'dnt
Dr Sands is employed at the pleasure of the BOV. Sands doesn't operate in a vacuum and as he isn't an independent person or dictator. He carries out the implementation of the wishes and decisions of the BOV , not the other way around. If Dr Sands is an "idiot" as you seem to feel he is, you best be lobbying your delegates and senators (State) as well as the new Governor (whomever that may be) as that's the only way you can effectively change either the President's decisions, or direction of currently stated short, medium and long-term goals of the University, Let alone get them to bide your wishes regarding a next new head football coach!
So, with that understanding (my details of hierarchy and organizational structureDr Sands is employed at the pleasure of the BOV. Sands doesn't operate in a vacuum and as he isn't an independent person or dictator. He carries out the implementation of the wishes and decisions of the BOV , not the other way around. So, with that understanding (my details of hierarchy and organizational structure between the BOV and University president may be somewhat off, the general thesis I believe is pretty accurate), good luck and keep howling at the moon (Sands) but don't expect immediate results

"Could have? - No, weren't asked, offered or invited. "Would have if...?"
Probably not because of "buyout", "GOR" restrictions, penalties

The article pretty clearly outlines Chad (the elder) Pennington not only
had a pretty good career at Marshall (part of 2X Ncaa Div.1-AA Championship games (1-1) but went on to lead the NY Jets to 1 AFC East Divisional title and 2 other playoff appearances. As a NY Jets fan, he was one of the brighter spots in a perennial hell hole of NFL playoff emptiness!
Chad's Stats at Marshall:
1,026 of 1,619 completions for 13,423 yards and 115 touchdowns with just 45 interceptions.

With all the complaining about the OC and play calling, how about the
Dropped passes? At least 2 or 3 first downs dropped! Except that last one.

Stayed above the Top 30 cut line for another week. Wish he could
build a little more cushion in his placement. Went to #31 after Rd. 3.

Not @bourbonstreet but, let me try. Last year as the penalties increased on
a per game basis (and overall), the team W-L record improved. The current "culture" emanating from camp is that the team is being drilled to continue to practice/play super-aggressive to the point of staring at going over the line. Question is how does this play out game time? Good, improved aggressive play WITHOUT going over the line OR Not so Good, too many penalties called, over the line play results in negative play results. Which will it be?
How'd I do B'street?

@1947Sunbowl (not VT FB related) you just named my entire 1st and 2nd
year professors by a wide majority. I had Shillig as my 1st year professor for lab and spent plenty of time in Dunay(s) "classes". Ferrari wasn't back in power yet when I arrived at Tech but, it was pretty evident that he was the heavy-weight in the room as soon as he re-entered the Cowgill world in '76-'77. Did you have a chance to avail yourself of Tom Regan's little-known student exchange program? Before Ferrari set up that whole Switzerland VT outpost, Regan had an informal agreement with the head of the Architectural Association (UK's AIA counterpart), School of Architecture. It wasn't widely advertised and it seemed to only become available based on whether there was any available space in the school to accept a half-dozen students from Tech into their program. I was lucky enough for the stars to align, and I spent my entire 3rd year attending the AA in downtown London. It was pretty wild because, in typical Tom Regan fashion, there was NOTHING formal or procedural about ANYTHING! A group of 6 of us, banded together, bought airline tickets together, flew to London and just dropped in with absolutely NO support in place! No lodging, No guarantee that the AA (school) would even know who we were. Of course, left to our own devices and resources, (individually, not VT or Regan!), we managed to survive and it ended up being one of the best years of my life, as I've looked back on it (several times over the course of life).
And, as another odd but interesting note to my experience with the School of Architecture at Tech, Jaan Holt actually was THE MOST important person in all of my dealings with VT Architecture school and my personal career. I won't regale the entire TSL audience with another multi-page "personal experience" story!

We may have crossed paths back then. Any connnections with
the usual cast of characters back then? There was the group the seemed to flock to the Dunays (now thereβs an example of follow the big Guy (Ferrari) and youβll end up going places, without much effort or headwind), or the Greek Cellar group that folloed the pied piper prof with the bohemian look of Trotsky (wispy long gray beard, little wire-rimmed circular-lensed glasses, heavy, long overcoat or those that were hangers-on of the golden child of the time Joe Saunders (I later came to work with him many years later here in NoVa, he - lead archβl PM, me - PM for a GC on Marshall HS).
