Make players and coaches sign similar contracts. Head coaches have buyouts that their new school pays. Players can transfer as many times as they want, but if they sign a 3 million for 3 year contract, and want to transfer after one year, have a buyout clause the new school pays (or the player pays if they want). It would give everyone equal rights to move but would probably also make players and schools think twice before going so heavy on transfers. It would also put a lot more emphasis on player development again. No new school is buying out a contract of a player that doesn’t produce. ** Edited by RCush13 at 5/17/2025, 11:26:56 PM

But in this era of basketball, it’s basically a pro team. And when you bring a lot of these players for 1 or at best 2 years, nothing ever really gels all that much. Just a very diff sport than we all grew up loving where we got to watch players develop over 3-5 years and really feel invested personally in the players.

Coaches can zoom with players and make offers. That’s what uva has been doing a lot this week. Using the dead period to make large, probably over market value offers, to the players they really want and use it as a take it now or it disappears. That’s how they got 4 this week that have never visited. It’s an interesting strategy, and I guess you have to have the financial ability to overspend but if you do, it’s a great way to get in there without other schools being able to get them on campus

State it seemed like there were some issues with their basketball budget in terms of NIL and where they would position money. Now with Wade they may have secured more financial commitments. Uva on the other hand seems poised to be in the top 20 of NIL for basketball. They have pretty openly stated they will have 8-9 million for men’s basketball this upcoming season. That’s an avg of over 500k per player (it won’t obviously be evenly distributed).

Dude, that’s a stretch. Yea he played in New Zealand for a year after injuries ended his nba career. Then he came back to the states. I hardly think that qualifies as jumping around college basketball as a coach. He was an assist at Wisconsin for his dad and Bo Ryan, then went with his dad to WSU. Then took over WSU then UVA. So an Assistant at one school then the two schools he was a HC. That’s jumping around over 21 years?

How is that moving around with the best of them. He coached for 3 years at WSU and the rest of his career at uva. I feel like he would be in the bottom 1% for moving around jobs for pretty much any profession in the world. He’s allowed to just not enjoy the state of the sport. He’s allowed to believe it’s not in a good place. It doesn’t mean it’s the only reason he’s leaving, but he said it’s a contributing factor. There is not way that anyone looks at college sports right now and thinks it’s super healthy. I don’t think anyone is totally in the wrong outside of the NCAA themselves. I believe you should have some kind of limit on transfers but also some type of limit on coaches in terms of constantly changing schools/jobs. I don’t know how you pull it off, but I think going to a system of 3 year contracts would be better. Just like a rookie deal. I think basketball as a product is better when teams play together more. Over time that is proven true in almost all sports. I would rather see teams with salary caps and singing a high school player for 3 years and knowing a team and fan base has more continuity. I think in the long run that keeps the interest higher. I believe the more invested a fan base is in seeing the group grow and win over multiple the more likely they are to spend money to support that team

He’s always done everything with class. Stood by his players thru thick and thin. Makes sure even the 13th guy on the bench gets good NIL. Where have you ever seen an example of him not advocating for players? You act like he’s just out for a money grab. Any person with insight could watch that press conference and see a person who was broken hearted about leaving but didn’t think he had it in him anymore in this environment. I get it. It’s exhausting. And I know you coached as an assistant for a few years. That doesn’t mean you know the pressure of running an ACC program for 15 years. The man seems burnt out and he’s earned the right to express his views in a very respectful way on the state of college athletics. I honestly believe college athletics will be dead in the next 20 years. I think it will be club based except for football, basketball and maybe outside shot at baseball but probably not baseball. In the end it just makes more financial sense for the nba and nfl to start to control their defacto minor league systems. They have the experience with cba and players unions and can take the top 30-50 programs in each sport and run their minor leagues thru the colleges

The fact that there is no break in the cycle with the transfer portal. You go from playing till March/April to recruiting your team back and the portal to summer workouts to fall practices. The schedule the ncaa has created is making the job of a coach not nearly as sustainable long term. 16 hour days 7 days a week for the majority of the year is exhausting. He said he just didn’t feel he could give it everything he had anymore. There is nothing wrong with someone acknowledging that the changes in the landscape are too much. I was a D1 athlete for a team that finished top 25 and wish we had NIL. But I also get where he is coming from. He values the relationship side and the mentoring of a kid to a man. That is an aspect that isn’t nearly as prevalent as it used to be. He might just not find it as enjoyable anymore

They are extremely competitive and actually have a deeper chest than they have used. Partly because that’s not how Bennett liked to operate. I believe in the past it’s been said that every player on the team gets 200-250k with the top guys getting around 500k with some of the local deals they get. Right after K and Williams. He took an awful uva program and has a .700 career winning percentage in conference. That’s an insane mark especially with how good the league was from 2010-2020.

I think saying their system just doesn’t work anymore is a slight exaggeration. These are their final ACC standings the last 11 years 2014 - 1st 15 - 1st 16 - 2nd 17 - 5th 18 - 1st 19 - 1st 20 - 2nd 21 - 1st 22 - 6th 23 - 1st 24 - 3rd Yes the ncaa tournament needs to have better results but it’s hard to say the entire system doesn’t work with those results.

The replay, there is almost no contact at all. Her body turns a tiny bit almost as much to watch the shot to see if it goes in like any player does. Was just an unfortunate landing. Could happen to anyone. Calling the uva player a goon and acting like it was done on purpose is not even close to what happened.

That was kind a of classic non contact acl injury. For women especially who are extremely tall, it’s very common.

Time adapting to the transfer world and NIL world that is now college basketball. At the same time, while the teams haven’t been quite as dominant, Bennetts last 6 teams have finished 2018 1st ACC 2019 1st ACC (national title) 2020 2nd ACC 2021 1st ACC 2022 6th ACC 2023 1st ACC Obviously the 6th place finish is a major outlier and this years team isn’t looking great. But it’s a pretty small sample to conclude that Bennett won’t be able to adapt. I think things will start to revert to pre-covid times after next season as all the 6th year players are out of college basketball. It has really screwed up the game to have 18 year olds play against 25 year olds. I think you will see Mike Young’s results get better as he gets back to a more even playing field at least in terms of age and physicality of players. Very much in first round and have been moving him up to close to the back of the lottery are wrong? ESPN just moved him up to #10 and did a big write up on him and why he could keep rising. The Athletic has him at #18. Even nbadraft.net moved him from not ranked to 31 in their last update a couple weeks ago. Clearly people are seeing something in him. They said he’s the only player in the last 25 years to be in the top 20 of steal and block percentage at the same time. Still more stretch 4, but 2 inches and 26 pounds is a big difference. Although I think Buchanan will be the starter for them in most games unless an opponent is going small ball. Allows them to have a more physical presence on the floor and a shooter to bring off the bench.
