I believe that order is the way they finished at National's ...
at the end of the season. I have a hard time thinking we would be 7th in that field. Seedings are actually done pretty close to the tournament. However, your path would be correct if it doesn't change.

You are probably correct ...
I took it that Wendell had a scoop and the coaching news, although unofficial, broke weeks ago. If it is the coaching news, that popcorn has already been eaten.

fans, itβs gonna be a fun week.

So let's pull ...
Schubert, Shapiro, and convince Jax Smith also and go step on Oklahoma State's head as the #2 team in the country. It's not that difficult, right? (TIC)

184# transfer portal?
With several names being mentioned on the board that we are pursuing for 184, is the writing on the wall that Jaxon Smith will not be a possibility? I know that there is still time for him to enter the portal. Doesn't seem to be as much smoke around this as there was earlier in the season.

Give it time ...
They have Church #4, Burton #2, Desiante #5, Sasso #4, Mullen #3, they clearly have a long ways to go before they are finished. No way those rankings will hold.

Thanks wasris and dallasvt for the scoring breakdown ... (?)
So VT scored 6 pts from 174 - HWT. I think, as does everyone, Penn St and Oklahoma St are podium bound. Everyone else is competing for one spot. Nebraska saw the podium with 8 AA's and no winners. 8 champions return, which doesn't mean everyone repeats but most of them probably will be favored. I just don't see without some type of overhaul at the uppers how we produce the necessary points to get the last spot. Can we generate an additional 60-65 points at lower/mid to make up the difference?

True, Bishop McCort High School would have finished top 5 ...
at Nationals with Jax, Bo, and Melvin. However, there's probably not one division 1 team that they would beat in a dual.
Wrestling Board

I believe someone posted if everything had gone to seed we ...
would have been #6. So just a little shy of expectation.

SIR: Has anyone broken down what each VT wrestler scored?
We got 41.5 points for the tournament, just wondering what each wrestler received toward that team total.
Wrestling Board

1-4 ...
Lost to Jax, Vega, Robideau, and Lockette. Bullock would have lost to Ryder but Ryder didn't wrestle.

Are Bo and Jax on a collision course for the main event finals next year?
I wonder if 2 guys from the same high school have ever met in a NCAA final.
Edit: Google said only in D 3 when brothers met in the final.

At HWT ...
What about Braxton Amos? If I recall we were in it up until the end. Also wasn't he from West Va, which would be a much shorter trip.

Strong portal guy ...
What about Jaxon Smith, who would be a top 5 184#. He was high school teammates with Caleb Henson and is currently taking a medical redshirt at university of Maryland, due to an ankle injury. Im not an insider but have heard and seen his name mentioned a few times. That would be an amazing pull.

This is where things get cloudy for me ...
If the goal next year is to have the best lineup possible, I don't see how you would not make Miller happen. There is not a lineup available that would be stronger without Melvin. Now, if they are making a decision about going forward, I agree with you, let MM come in 27. I would still like to see 175 - 285 retooled a little bit next year. Not every position but at least 2 of those weights could use an upgrade.

I think I did read a post about him wrestling at Christiansburg ...
High School next season. I wonder if that could create a situation like Jax did at Ok St.

Melvin Miller status?
There was some smoke about Miller coming in with Bo for 2026. Is this a legit thing or just someone's wishful thinking? No matter what the lineup looks like next year, it would definitely be stronger with MM in it. Just crazy to imagine half of our starters legitimately having a shot at a national championship next year.

That's right and Bo gave Jaxon Joy his only loss of the season ...
at the same event. Joy is #3 149 on Wrestlestat.com.

To me it looks like OKS is just sleepwalking ...
through the dual and we're giving very little resistance to it. I guess we're just happy with the close scores.

Jayden James?
I don't have an issue with a kid who wants to wrestle at Penn St. The $$$, the fan base, the culture (Since Cael), coaching, and NIL are all elite. However, JJ must have seen something in Blacksburg to warrant a commitment. Is there any reason to think he would have stayed if we had secured a commitment from Bo and Melvin a little earlier? I'm sure JJ and Melvin could have figured out the 165/174 weight. I'm sure those 2 would have pushed each other day in and day out. What a scary lineup that would have been.

125...
Ventresca has one more year. Rozas is a top 10 120# and Coluccio top 20 113#. Keegan is a 28 grad.
Mullen and Sasso both have 2 yrs left, Carini has been listed as #1175 in the country he is a jr. Rocha top 20 190# is a 26 grad and Kanopka graduates 27 has also been listed as the #1 215 in the country.
Edit: Keegan may not be official but hard to think he won't follow his brothers.

Caleb Henson?
Apologies if this has already been posted, but what were the expectations for Caleb going into this tournament? I don't follow much freestyle and I only saw the bronze medal match. Can someone explain the break, where they were being fanned? Is that always at a certain time regardless of what is happening on the mat or was there another reason for the timeout?

Goodbadugly ...
I have to say I pretty much agree with everything you said. My original post was TIC mostly. I don't see Robie replacing Sasso, in fact, he even stated in an interview he doesn't like recruiting over guys. I totally do not think any of what I said will actually happen. I was just saying what it would actually take to have a punchers shot at being #1. Even if we were able to get 2 top 10 transfers, we aren't beating Penn St. Also,I don't even know how many paid coaches a staff can have. I thought it used to be 3 and that's where we are at. I appreciate the response.

There's got to be 3 wrestlers out there that would want to be a part ...
of taking down Penn St next year, right? We know we can't do it with our current roster (2027), maybe we could sneak a 4th place finish but not sure. Missing out on Singleton (we were in his top 2, I think) and James (He was committed) is such 2 crushing losses that really would have gotten us one step closer at what is now a glaring need. So we have Eddie, Aaron, Dillon, Bo, Caleb, possibly Melvin, and Mullen. I don't know the severity of Campbell's injury or if the staff could or would use those 7, it just seems likely that they would. Let's use some big time NIL to get Ruiz (Top 2-4 #174 out of Cornell), Sinclair (Top 1-3 #184 out of Missouri), and Little (Top 3 197# out of Little Rock, who for some reason Sasso dodged in an earlier tournament.) This will be the closest VT has come to a National Championship since 2000 football. I would love to see it happen and I have a right to dream.

26/27 133# ?
I don't follow international wrestling at all. Will Ono be the #1 guy at 133 next year or do some of these younger guys have a chance? Using Wrestle Stat as a resource, I see there are 3 Fr. in the top 7 and that doesn't include Jax or Seidel. Of course Blaze is one so either him or Ono changes weight.

So no one cares about winning these types of tournaments (team)
I totally understand that everything in wrestling leads up to the NCAA's. I don't understand why we send 3 guys from one weight class to Midlands and not one 149 rep to Southern Scuffle. I would have sent enough guys to Scuffle to least beat Penn St and look like I wanted to make a statement nationally. I'm not dogging the coaches, they know more than I ever will, but to represent a tournament with PSU and to come out on top, wouldn't that say something about a desire to be where they are? Again, they win a tournament with 11 backups and we send 6 starters and finish behind them. I'm focusing on the wrong things aren't I?

Bishop McCort fall -a-thon ...
Bo in 17 seconds, Jax in 19 seconds, Melzilla 24 seconds, Owen 39 seconds. 67 team points in 12 matches. 67-0 (Double forfeit at 107#, no points for either school.) Keegan wrestled at 133#, got a Tech Fall in 50 seconds.

Is he nursing an injury? Isn't everyone else getting ready as well? They didn't want to send him out for 60 - 80 seconds?

Bishop McCort dual last night.
I watched Bishop McCort's dual last night on NFHS. It does require a subscription but you are also able to pretty much watch almost any basketball or football game in the country. Make sure it is the official NFHS and not some knockoff site. Back to the dual, I have never seen a dual end so fast in my life. The entire dual only lasted 28 mins. There were 4 forfeits so that helped, but not one match even went to the 2nd period and high school is a little different because the 1st period is 2 mins. McCort had 4 forfeits, 4 TF's, and 4 falls for a 68-6 win. Their only loss was a forfeit at Keegan's weight 113. On NFHS, I have never seen any announcers or any commentating so I'm not sure what was going on with Keegan. The others VT recruits just breezed through. Owen McMullen had a pin with 1 second left in the first, the longest match of the night. Bo and Melvin both TF'd their opponents in under 50 seconds.

They made that 27-3 run in the second half look so easy.
I know our competition wasn't good, but that stretch looked like what a top 25 team should do to a team at the bottom of the Big South. Of course the first half didn't look that great, but VT still scored at will. The Providence game should really show what this team can do. I agree, they sure have been fun so far.

Do you think...
the goal next year is to get the 4th spot and a receive a team trophy? This still would be quite an accomplishment. I just don't see us having a lineup full of top 5 guys at each class, which is usually what it would take to finish first. I love seeing the will to go for the top and I hope we can build on the Bassett momentum.
