Wrestling has 9.9 scholarships for 10 starting weight classes. Wrestling also employs partial scholarships unlike the revenue sports. generally blue chip recruits are on higher percentages of a full ride. Pre nil and pre portal generally coaches hedged their bets depending on what they felt the potential was for the wrestler. Some schools also differentiated by cost in terms of in state and out of state scholarships. NIL has opened the possibility of compensating a wrestler roughly equivalent to that of a scholarship. In effect it's opened the total number beyond 9.9 though The portal has made balancing lineups more challenging for the exact principle you pointed out. But to be honest it's been harder for mid majors who seem to inevitably lose more talent than they gain. In the end it a very difficult balancing act. The better the school (Iowa psu etc) the more likely they are to stockpile talent generally because they can restock either through the portal or nil more easily

I'd be shocked if this happens but everyone talks at the tourney. Having people like korbin and mcgonagle succeed matters

To now. I get to sit down and watch a finalist every Saturday night of the tourney. We have multiple people in the semis with non -zero chances of advancing to the finals. The program is stacked with talent throughout and every weight has national qualifiers and all American contenders either wrestling or redshirting or arriving next year. You sit through enough American university or George mason duals and seasons and your standards get set I suppose (and not intended as a shot at those programs) Big names like Michigan or Cornell aren't producing finalist. Other programs are staring down potential loses in relevance (Mizzou post O'Toole if Sinclair doesn't become the guy) Minnesota seems to have a good one in mcNelly but it wasn't as rosy mid season. Northern Iowa is looking at a slide backwards too and isu for all they've spent on dresser and team has no one to replace carr. Again maybe it's expectations and perspective, but this run reminds me of the tyrod years where folks may not realize how good we've had it til it's gone.

Wrote a long explanation but 9 outta 10 if Henson wins and 10 outta 10 if we won the dual title outright, qualify all 10 weights, pick up another AA or two and get Eddie or someone else as a finalist. Psu's rtc was reporting roughly a 6 million dollar advantage. At that time pre-nil, I used buying world team training partners as a comparable example for investment. With 6 Olympic weights, you could buy the Olympic team as purely training partners at $100K per wrestler for a full decade. Ad they did for a minute with Snyder and Gilman. Realistically for VT to sniff a championship, the cael dynasty has to fail and there needs to be a heckuva lot more parity in the top 10. Okie st rebuilding is a start but programs like minnesota Pitt and Lehigh etc need to return to where they were. Guys like mark hall leaving his backyard for happy valley is gonna have to stop On our side well need about 4 finalists minimum with a stronger team behind them. Well have multiple weight classes where the backup could win AA off the bench (see Barr and beard at 197 for psu or iowas log jam at 174/184)

He was pretending to look for a roll through tilt without commiting to the roll through part. Standing on your head does nothing to generate momentum or leverage to actually turn. Ajs been criticized for doing nothing on top when he rides and he seemed to be trying to demonstrate that he can turn on top. Only in this case it was apparent even with Andy's wrist he wasn't commiting to try to use it to turn.

I believe someone had the statistical analysis on intermat about it, that removing the hail Mary 7 point moves or pins from a wrestler who was down, scoring goes down as compared to duals.

Where they have had past successes, the season goal is load management. Watching guys like latona or Julian Ramirez or parco etc keeping proven guys healthy and ready for this weekend is what matters. In the case of wolak and mcgonagle we seem to have navigated their nagging injuries well to have both guys wrestling for AA tomorrow am.

Long term hip has a shot at the top of the podium. To get there he will need to wrestle with pressure of seed. He's done that at the jiujitsu level so it's just adjusting. As always the goal is to have freshmen qualify for the NCAA tourney if they make the starting lineup. Hips done that, were in gravy territory now

With vt wrestling it's always about the next small progression as the program builds. For years we would recruit and say "we want to make you a national champion" but up until Devin we didn't even have a finalist. Then came mekhi, then Henson proved we weren't a one time wonder. The next barrier is a multi time champ (cause the bluechips all expect to win multiple national championships) I get the number of AAs and other goals may be a focus but calebs result would again be a program elevating type of result. Also a sneaky important one is mcgonagles result. With the way transfer portal and nil has gone, team titles are going to require at least one hole filling transfer. We showed we could do it with korbin, but that was largely due to the program melting down at edinboro. McGonagale showing we know how to make short term transfers successful is also important for long term program growth.

But the lower seeds (paniro and the orange) are an easier draw than what could have been. Also garland has to be losing it with the cedeno seeding at 141.

Matrix criteria must have loved raf, kinda shocked for his seed. McGonagale gets a bum draw round one with his army opponent Overall beyond tech, they need to tweak the criteria to reward wrestlers for wrestling during the season. Seems like up and down the brackets, guys who skipped tourneys or sat out dual meet matchups were generally rewarded. The sport is gonna suffer as the trend of make coaches rank eligibility, make win % eligibility and make rpi eligibility reigns supreme. The fact that guys with 30+ matches and win % over .800 are getting 20 something seeds is a problem while other programs have guys at 17-1 pulling top seeds is gonna discourage competition dates

Between 29 and 30+. I agree that he's not a sure thing but with only 25 automatic bids it does bode better that even with an upset and bid steal or two at conference he's in decent shape to make top 33 at large. That being said go win the damn thing hahaha Overall good news for the acc that every weight has 3+. Makes all the third place matches matter and let's a lot of guys on the bubble control their own destiny

Re: latona, I'm sure the duty he pulled covering while korbin went at his best weight slowed his progress. Given his size this season, he most certainly spent that entire year managing weight and not working on skills. Did it for the the team and the result was worth it. His style has also had to significantly change from being the 9 foot spaghetti monster at 125 instead to being more normal at 141. In term of his style I think he's improved significantly from neutral in terms of technique. Re: HWT it's all about training partners. Hwt like 125 is one of the areas where having a professional at your weight is so important. I think we've spent our dollars so we'll from the sertc but more money would lead to a place for investment in coaching/training partners. Jared has filled in admirably in that gap Re 166 I think it's also a bit of khi winning the NC at 165 his r-fr year. Hard to recruit that position with khi and Brady on board. Obviously I still have hope things click one last time for Connor and he has all the tools but mac is already developing well.

Sam 17-2 --> 14-3 --> 14-9 --> 26-8 --> 20-9 --> 15-6 app American at two weight classes poised to do so at a third. Came in with monumental expectations and has exceeded them Caleb 27-5 --> 30-2 --> 12-0, you can literally see the progression in the ridge matches. Raph early enough that I'm Sony sure we should look at Ditto church Tj 14-5 --> 14-4 -->0-4. The unspoken subtext that I think this venting is aimed at, TJ will be fine if frayer believes there's not much to worry on OR Sam 0-5 --> 6-3 -->21-5 --> 13-7 -->5-4 maybe I could make a case for this argument here but if you watched freshman fisher after Fauquier to now you have to see the development. The world team development was obvious to me...? Smith 4-6 --> 8-4 --> 15-9 --> 18-11 -->4-3, again maybe I could see the argument here but much like fisher the development is obvious watching freshmen versions to now Catka 10-4 --> 10-6 --> 19-8 --> 17-8 -->5-2 I could maybe see the argument here as well but hwt is such a different ball game in terms of body development that it's a little misleading. Also factor in that most of these records have 3-5 wins freshmen year from the freshman and sophomore sertc open. I just don't get the comment against the record. Losing sucks and I'm sure we underperformed but that's why you schedule this match now. The timing is nearly identical to day one of ncaas from the acc tourney with respect to cklv and now the osu dual. It's on the road in a foreign environment. For some guys it's their first time being "the guy" for others it's their first time as the starter. Dual did what it was supposed to.

This is an ideal test at a tough time of the year for the wrestlers. From the unmatched episode posted before the dual, this is why we went on the road this time of year (finals holidays etc) to get a guage of where we're at. A little bit of the VT football attitude is leaking over here. Deep breaths. Tons of positives, definite areas to improve
