She is a good fit for that offense.

She is a good fit for that style of play. We got more athletic today and even though hate losing Nelson, still think we have the athletes to replace Nelson. She was very smart will miss her.

Welcome Lauren

So excited to see you come to Va Tech. Living in Knoxville for over a decade and knowing Cleveland, TN very well as I worked through there every month, Blacksburg is a great fit. Excited for you and great choice !! You will love the campus and school. Hope you have strong workouts this summer and enjoy the transition. Great fit for our TEAM !!! GO HOKIES and I realize how Vol Nation grows on you as well but you will not find that slack in the fan base either at Blacksburg. Congrats. Great Fit for the program!

UCLA Model

Got admit, they looked and completed the part better than anticipated. Saw lot of Texas and enough of South Carolina but those seniors for UCLA just played and matched so well against different teams. They were just basketball players with consistent strength, size and play making. Well coached and schooled bunch of athletic women. Well done and surprising once you see the way they won those last 2 or 3 games. Nice to see a change. Shows good basketball with right size and positioning can win alot of basketball games. It was ugly at times watching the final 4 but you could see the floor spread and dribble drive and movement in UCLA and their big just play great position basketball.

Florida Gators and SEC

Have to admit the Sec is loaded in women's basketball from a record perspective. 7 undefeated schools and another 7 or so with one loss. This game will be a good gauge of league depth. Will be curious to see how many of these schools get into the dance because right now the records are off the charts. Will be very curious to see how ACC and SEC compare at the end of March for tournament play. This is a huge game.

Its bigger than next year or even year after

This program is all about realizing the ACC is a mess and teams have to be positioned for what comes next. James Franklin has won me over and realize that his vision and professionalism of doing it right and you have to compete is what we need. I like Shane but realize now that northeast Big TEN, SEC vision and connection along with Va Tech passions are what is needed. Not saying we are going to 85000 stadiums but do see that we need a new trend. Recruiting has been more than impressive, we have not had this many 4 stars in I do not remember when especially with a core focus. GO HOKIES. This is a top 10 program for atmosphere and honestly one of the prettiest schools in the country.

Nice, best second game of season in any team in long time

Nice coaching, good decisions able to avoid sloppy play for periods. Well done. Would not want to play either of those teams if they are healthy at tournament time.

Praise God is all I can say.

So happy to just see her path continue to expand. She is a sweetheart of a woman and athlete so hard to find anywhere in this world. Just hope her path of success continues to open up. You never know where the path will lead, just be open to the call.

Did anyone call for a HOKIE WIN this weekend?

Tech is one of the most penalized teams in college football. If they can control penalties and win turnover battle calling upset.

Recruiting 2026 VA Tech and South Carolina post high school

The 2026 recruiting cycle is here and Va Tech is right now ranked last in Acc when looking at average composite ranking of 86.23, UVA would be just ahead of us. South Carolina is tenth in the nation with a composite of 91.82. South Carolina has only 15 commits and Va Tech has only 9 commits. Do like the young guys that have been playing this year so wonder what we anticipate from a portal risk. Most of our risk the last few years has probably been 65 percent graduation and 35 percent portal but the portal losses have been huge because we were not able to build around as a team. So time will tell but still big difference where Tech needs to be in recruiting, tech was 87.41 last year and around 88 in 2024. Sometimes its more about what you do with these high school rankings but its evident the time to keep the depth is much harder so the balancing act needs a true strategy. Do you get 5 or 15 and commit to them financially and in the system and hope you have a few that can play earlier or how do you work with the string shorter on both sides now.

Wrong Turn Part 3

Good movie series actually. Liked coach Pry, never got how he could never get both sides of the line any better when every major college program that is their focus. Coach Fuentes actually had some very good offensive line players. Coach Pry was good for the school, honestly would have like to see Whit go before Pry with a new AD. Tech lost it last year when they did not recruit well going into those offensive and defensive line transitions. Both sides of the ball are 3 to 4 players away from being a decent team. Drones honestly I think the offensive line has given up on him. Time to move on from his as well honestly or move to a dual QB. We need to find an offensive that can create ball movement and motivation to stick around for next year. Half of these players have probably already checked out and honestly not alot but you want to keep those that have skills.

Would agree and attitudes are just different

Was in 132 last night and good seats up about 30 rows from field level. Felt the same thing, what happen to the old key chain noise on 3rd down and people standing more. It blew me away as well there was more noise during songs playing than watching the game. Did like the students stayed but they have not been exposed to that defensive, special teams mentality of VA Tech so they get soft as fan base. Attendance was very good and beautiful and night. Thought the team looked coached up okay and saw some adjustments. The stat board is very weird Vandy QB only threw like 18 or 19 passes but efficiency and chunk plays seemed to just crush Tech. Team did remind me of some FCS builds and just not those 3 or 4 players on both sides of the ball that can balance or help the lines. The offensive line depth is horrible which honestly has been my biggest fear for this team for last 4 years, have a couple really good ones but depth and balance are lacking. Drones need to be replaced honestly and team needs to move forward if we lose one of the next 4 games. Drones can get going for 3 or 4 games but it was obvious the line depth and mentality got hammered in the second half. No one knows how to explain that second half and the team has some okay athletes, look like a very good second unit honestly and need more around them. We seem to lack some height and size and can cause many match up problems and when I look at the game, it seems Vandy found the right mix and just man handled Tech the second half. Thought Tech was faster but Vandy was bigger. Honestly Tech could look at Vandy and say we are Vandy of a decade ago at times and what did they do. I am very surprised how we have let the lines on both sides become so down in depth and talent. There are some decent athletes and football players but are they top tier D1?

Positive so far

Team looks conditioned, stronger and good footwork for receivers. Defense has been subbing and doing a very nice job of adjustments and stunts. Offensive line really does not have any major playing time for those who were signed a few years back and new guys look okay not great but okay. Drone honestly has not looked any better in accuracy but offense has looked balanced just not cohesive yet. Overall game has went like thought but with new coaches, scheme showing greater improvements. There is a team in there somewhere lets hope we find the right flows to build momentum.

Welcome Spela

You will enjoy Hokie Home ! Looks like a nice all around basketball player from under the hoop and outside. Honestly that is very hard at any level but that is what stood out to me in the quick video review. Go Hokies.

Welcome Kaleo

Looks like she likes ICE in the vein. Keep up the good work, we might be very hard to handle in a few more years with more perimeter shooting.

Welcome Melannie Daley, Recruiting

Hope Va Tech continues your growth as an athlete and student. It feels like we are going to be a much better shooting team this year with additions from portal and you know with playing time Coach Duffy does a great job of developing players. Still hope we get another senior or grad level player at forward or center. I saw where Tracey Hueston went to Coastal Carolina tonight she was the Roanoke product. But if you look closely we are a better shooting team on paper now losing the smarts we had in Eck and Rose especially when they were finding their spots will be hard to replace but I do feel like we will have a composite of speed and handling that will open up more shooting. The youngsters coming in will have a big opportunity and Petersen played very well the last month of the season. Would say this team will be better than what we had last year and probably just a player away from being significantly better. The roster has balance and you can look at TN roster and they had two players at 6'4 or 6'5 and after that they were smaller than Va Tech last year so 6'2 and 6'3 is probably in the upper size for girls ball. Where 6'4 to 6'6 is probably more like the 6'10 to 7'1 for men. Tn did have the second highest high school rankings and I think first in portal so they did very well. Like what we have done, we have a couple proven players coming in who probably have even more upside, The freshmen love to see them get going.

Tech has alot of interesting research and Medical opportunities

People are really amazed what is going on at Va Tech. Its a great school to settle in and explore more graduate work. Vandy is Vandy but alot of programs are taking cuts in biomedical but Tech has a very diverse base of research in multiple areas. Vandy does an impeccable job as well though and honestly great place to settle after graduation if you like big cities. You will sit in traffic from 2 pm till 7pm if you are not careful or know your way around. Nashville is number one area in United States for health data but Va Tech has alot of cool programs to really bring value. There is alot under the hood but she is young and Va Tech might be easier to just focus and grow into a doctorate degree. You will get into plenty at Va Tech would not have said that over a decade ago but if you see Va Tech research its been quite amazing the last decade and just expanding. Those field are feeding each other as well so biomedical can cross into multiple areas of machine, chemical and data. Its stuff like below most people have no idea Tech is involved in. https://www.theroanokestar.com/2025/04/18/va-tech-researc... https://www.vt.edu/about/rankings.html

Agreed, Dorian always got better as well

I've noticed certain teams like Va Tech players. Washington and Bills come to the top. Great pick up think so as well.

And Our Love. We Appreciate you

Enjoyed watching her grow as a person and athlete at Va Tech. Thank You Matilda.

Another good edition, playing time around Welcome Kilah

Another athlete which I think transfers well in women's basketball. We have two players above 6'2 joining and remember there were only 6 others players in the top 100 above that size. Kilah could be a double figure girl in one column or another each game if she puts that ability she has in speed in continued execution to ball. The transition from Colorado air to Blacksburg should be enjoyable transition. Welcome to Blacksburg and Va Tech, you will learn alot and work very hard and cared for at Va Tech. That front wing position will be hard to get around and will cause some havoc in transitions. If we can learn to finish at the rim better and avoid turnovers developing a very interesting roster. Still think we see a possible Tracey Hueston and other Sr or post grad students join at forward positions. 2026 has some very interesting big players out there in high school.

Ta Mia Scott, Tracey Hueston both would be good fits. Portal week end?

Think both would be very good fits on paper. Grad Senior play forward and Tia Mia can score. Does portal end this week for both football and basketball? Tracey is from Roanoke. Come and start that grad degree at Tech. ** Edited by HokieSport at 4/20/2025, 10:08:17 PM

Rankings

Amani, 14th Ranked forward out of forwards and only 19 in whole top 100. Kate 36 ranked out of guards out of 44 out of the top 100. Aniya going to break hearts when going up for rebounds at 6'2. All attractive as well. I think the P is like a center or power forward. Aniya was right outside of the top 100 last I looked but has a very high ranking. So very nice and guess will be in the gym soon with other teammates. P 3 PG 16 W 18 F 19 G 44 Grand Total 100

How many spots do we have open ?

Listened to the game and watched the interviews today. Its been a tough few weeks for everyone and dollars are tight and weather so it was apparent not as many folks as usual. Do get the sense that our defense will be always a learning groups and improving. I think the biggest think coach Pry said are two things. We are no where near where we need to be and mentioned new and a few players who have grown but I think the most telling thing was he said, we are doing things we have not done since he's been there. That was following a comment about 6 or 7 deep around the secondary. Any thoughts on how many spots we are going to attempt to fill in the portal.

Kansas State Attendance not bad

RW should still feel good attendance at KSU only about 20,000 student population with average of about 5,300 attend and only 16,000 full time students. Tech has grown much to about 38,000 and we as well average around 5,300 so should feel supported in the program via fan support.

I hope you did not take that seriously

Its just a mixed up world but great job to land at KSU. She learned alot at Va Tech and no doubt will continue to improve as long as conditioning and speed improve.

Makes sense

Ky did not treat her right, we did and she is still dissing on Ky after Kansas State beat Ky. Kansas state is probably not a bad place to go to school at all.

UConn really grew a lot this year

Saw them a few times earlier in the year and they were good but nothing like that, what a complete balance of speed, strength and most of all just operating as a team. Great positioning on defense and moving those feet on both sides of the ball. Great win, deserved. Made it look easy the last 2 games. Good size and strength.

Between the portal, the money and athletes not really growing

I enjoy womens basketball more than anything right now. Soon about to look at track and field schedule for next year or plan to attend Acc or one of the big events. If you have never been to one of the top collegiate track and field events like in Indy, out West or other highly recommend. Great Athletes and entertaining. College football I follow in regards to recruits but I am not going to waste my hours anymore following the players, will know them as the season starts and grows but there is just too much crapy anymore in college sports. I hope the limit it to 1 transfer during the 4 years and stop all of this stuff. Unless your medical injury.

That would be interesting Clara

TCU would be an interesting fit. Great program, great coach and probably honestly more family like than we've heard about before. Just reading the body language not the words.

Recruiting/Portal

Lot of good 2026 recruits out there and very excited about what is coming to Blacksburg in the freshmen, experienced players who have won and shown good traits. Would love if Silva came this way honestly, from her stats shoots around 57 percent and has big minutes against lot of good teams, LSU, Kansas State and so forth. Wonder what happen to the influence from GA on that one as well. If she is happy in the south come to a VA Tech, or go to a Midwest school. Lots of talent out there in 2026, personally rooting for Ava Rush to be considered and Ashlyn Koupal, Olivia Vukosa and Thiero sound very interesting as well. You would think we want 3 out of that 2026 class. Really like the core and hope they all stay, they know Tech, they feel the vibe and they work and have talent. Get those that are in the portal and dare say those conversations happen quickly after the season and with love. Just think we have a great foundation and want to keep it going. We are going to need some scorers and difference makers to compete against the top 10 but do think we have the potential to go up against those outside of the top 15 even now.

Goals for improvement

Conditioning continue to get quicker, stronger and flexible. Forwards, we need to find more depth. Coach Duffy system reminds me of having a basketball team and back in the day it was not unusual for forwards to have more presence and work off each in the lower post. I think she does great with guards but we need to learn that lower post in strength, stamina and play making. I think with Kate coming in we could get an outside shot. Still lot of not finishing at the basket, better zip on the passes and learning some how to open up that circle drive at the top of the key into a few other plays. It looked like it got bogged down and stopped out often. So find an inside out improvement, continue to just get better at basics. Now all the player have their own unique goals and also most important mental attitudes and just thankfulness as players and teammates. Great Year we Appreciate your work and great season looking back.

Yeah for extensions. transfer portal and growth

Yeah for extensions. We need to continue to advertise to portal players and top recruits its not unusual to come to Va Tech and grow and get better. Not to mention you have one of the best sports atmospheres in the country from football, track field, wrestling baseball. We still have very well respected athletes. Most people forget that in 23, Strack-attack was 95th, Samyha was 69, Mackenzie 65 and Cary's 58. All have proven to grow as people and players at Va Tech. Carleigh was 48. I would say also they improved just as much or not more under coach Duffy than coach Brooks. Coach Brooks is a great coach not to deny but it was obvious he likes to take a system and make the most of it, where Duffy seems to take a team and improve it. So Va. Tech continue to sing how we get recruits and improve them. Really like what we have coming in but as we all know we need probably 3 players and I hope most of the team and key cogs return next fall and also continue to love Va Tech. Honestly womens basketball and track and field are becoming my favorite Hokie sports anymore. And I had season tickets for all the Vick and years up to 2023. Nice year, enjoy this week and get back to work.

Ga Tech, Oregon, Nebraska and Big Ten

Last I saw Big Ten has a few teams projected for the tournament 13, Interesting though GA Tech beat both Nebraska and Oregon by pretty large margin. Today Washington beat Oregon and all those teams are just ahead of Va Tech. Va Tech is currently about 47th as of March 1st rankings. So yes a win against Ga Tech should put the Hokies in the tournament. Its possible a play in game could be as well. Looking at the last week or so that loss to Stanford hurt alot. But its a just a one game season right now and so lets rest, focus and prepare to have a tough game on Thursday. Right now the ACC has 8 projected and Big Ten has 13. I think the Big Ten could have too many teams the problem is they all have similia records with 10 losses or 11.

Recruits 2026, Thiero, Rush can we add Ruop?

Mimi, is up to 55 in the top 100 offered in Feb 25. Rush just moved up to the number 3 player in South Carolina visited over the weekend, is it possible to add Ruop a Va product up to 48 nationally but seems to have an infinity for that North Carolina area so far. Really enjoyed reading Rush profile describes Va Tech alot in what she is looking for in a school. If you want to be coached from the first to last player on the team come to Va Tech. Just be prepared to work, love and grow and most likely win.

Keep giving, growing and gaining appreciate

Athletes have to be self-aware and team aware and the hardest part is being able to do that in competition. Appreciate the growing on and off the court we have witnessed. Keep growing and focusing on the fundamentals and the attitude of protecting the ball, getting the rebound and out racing the next person down the court. Keep up the hard work girls and rest up, stretch and rest well this week. One play at a time. ** Edited by HokieSport at 2/23/2025, 7:23:32 PM

he called some really good games but

He called some really good games but honestly most of them felt like after we were like 3 and 5 or some crazy record. Then never saw the development in the offense that showed cased growth. We saw some player development but the offense as whole was questionable. Now under Fuentes we had a great first year and then felt like we just disappeared so it was an improvement but it was not a detailed improvement in the program and recruiting.

Nice list

There are couple on there that are very interesting. North Texas is very interesting and would like to see someone who can develop QB play as well.

Playbook and free pass for Whit

Honestly think this gives Whit a free pass and coach Pry another look at the putt. This should follow the similar path as DC but maybe a more proven hire. Someone that knows how to use the players on the roster to the fullest of their abilities. Honestly not sold on the position change for Bowen because to me we saw nothing but a high reliability to own four or five plays and players. Do not like that honestly many of these others guys have skill sets and need some playing time. Tech just is not as dominate as an Ohio State so essentially he will have 4 and 5 star players just line up. We saw how physical and complete Ohio State looked the whole playoff no one was as complete as that team and it gave them multiple weapons on play calling. Honestly think this is a great break for Va Tech and opportunity to re-set. It could all crumple like a house of cards or really begin a long term foundation of true Va Tech identity. I am okay with abandoning Va Tech history with the right offense and balance. Honest its probably like our new DC coordinator says you have to learn to adjust with what you have.

Carleigh has a nice edge more drills as well.

I agree with alot of what was written about dribbling ball to high some crazy drives but there is one thing I've noticed about her is that athletically she has a different gear. Really think she could as well spend a summer on lot of pull up bank drills, getting her head up at the rim when shooting those drives, learning that one more side step dribble things that really good scorers now how to do. Which would need to be professionally ingrained and taught. She has some skills and sometimes wonder if she has ADHD but she reminds me of an athlete that will always get better and you can tell she played with the guys on the floor because of how quick some of her steps can be. But she might be one you add her skill set to really add 2 or 3 new solid skill sets and spend the summer working on those. That is one beauty of this team, they have shown they are not afraid to work and now it will be adding those specific coordination, reaction, patience, strength and endurance part of being an athlete.

Like the DC Hire

We have hired two pretty big name offensive line coaches the last couple of years and honestly it did not bring much. Like this idea of hiring a coach that wants to work with schemes and adjustments. Also like the fact he has really moved around and learned a lot over the last decade. I saw more adjustments in the MN bowl game than I have seen in x amount of time with previous DC position. I thought they played their area pretty good with coach Marve but we could never make adjustments. Coach Siefkes will probably do very well with Bud floating around as well to just talk adjustments and other. Never got that sense the last few years after coach Hamilton. We did sign like 5 or 6 safeties as well and we all know we need to go get some linebackers. Tech will bring the defensive players we just have to get back to winning teams like 8 or 10 games a year. Think our schedule may have to get harder as well if the playoff continues to expand and grow.

Seniors in Women's college basketball

I'm very confident we are bringing in 2 players that will be good forwards for our program. I am also very confident we are brining in a wing/guard who can score and distribute for our freshman class next year. When you glance at things like shooting percentage, rebounds those seem to favor senior type players so think of a Liz and how efficient she was her Sr. year vs others. But when it comes to getting points I really think the numbers lean toward Sr but those freshman or Sophomores who just know how to score. Its a balance as we know and saw tonight. I think our nucleus is very interesting but as we know that efficiency is a need for the program and losing such key players that we lose next year there will be room for a couple of portal players. But I am not opposed to keeping youth if we continue to get top recruits. But the data and team suggest we need some growing players into their junior and senior years.

NC State nice guard depth.

Nc State just played the basic weakness of Va. Tech and Tech just not deep enough or able to withstand that depth. The score was horrible but there are some spots of interest. We still need a play making guard (Scorer) and scoring Forward from the portal and continue to move forward with young player. Missing SS really hurt tonight to slow down that speed and breaking down the top of the foul line. This one went as we thought some of the games could but not upset good learning experience. We know we are not in a Nc State of ND class this year and they are both better than last year. The girls are just getting better.

Drills, Drills and more Drills

I'm talking about catching, pivoting and controlling body movements. Then it would be still speed work and reaction time. Then it would be basketball play conditioning, shot selection, knowing when to just use her advantage. You can tell she is improving but honestly this looks more like how do you get someone more athletic, reaction time and confidence to just use skill sets. Then knowing how to use her length and use it to her advantage on the court.

McDonald's All American Nominee

All 3 girls were nominated for girls McDonald's all American game so congrats to Aniya, Amani and Kate. Usually the top 20 girls will probably be the ones going but this says a lot about character of recruits. They all seem to be growing as the season goes along as well. One thing I can honestly say about the Hokies this year is that you can see physical and mental improvement in every single player on that roster. Keep up the work!! Trent, a Virginia Tech commit, recently surpassed 700 points and 700 rebounds for her career, and broke the school's career blocks record (213 and counting). This season, they are combining to average 32.5 points, 14.4 rebounds, 9.1 assists, 4.4 steals and 4.3 blocks per game. 7 Iowans nominated for 2025 McDonald's All-American Game Amani Jenkins, Johnston (committed to Virginia Tech) Watauga girls basketball player Kate Sears has been nominated to play in the prestigious McDonald’s All-American game.

Good get honestly

This guy can make some plays. He was not as high ranked out from a stars perspective but he can make some plays. We need this type of player to compliment what we brought in and add depth. Could see some option type plays more this season if line is not as stout to blow people off line. He had good dozen or so touchdowns so knows what to do once the ball touches his hands.

Passing

Not a strength. Did you see the looks after some of those turnovers. They were deserved honestly cause that is what we saw early in the year. Just lot of lazy or not the urgency to execute on every play.

Conditioning looks good still

Tech has a very narrow team right now because of how young they are and a few players needing more growth. Hope we do add at least another player next year to team total. I thought we looked just as conditioned as UVA and played with finesse at times. Our spacing looks weird at times when we push the ball and honestly we only have Nelson who can really finish at the rim. So would think we need to learn to finish at the rim better, little more strength, foot speed is not terrible we are missing a key player. There were some positives from the UVa game but it was obvious UVA has some really interesting talented positions to build around. We know we still need a deeper front court and few players who can just drop their shoulder or strength their way into the basket. Still think we are getting better and will have to really use our assets more that flexibility and quick first steps.

Nice get in Sparks good size

4 star recruit almost a .90 so great addition. Hope we play some of these young receivers that is one position that seems like if you let them play and if they can catch they can get some playing time. Nice size 6'3. Tech is moving up in rankings currently 36 overall and 28th in transfer. The 36 takes into account high school and transfer portal. Really think we could be inside top 30 before this is said and done. Our transfer guys have a nice mix of skill and playing time. Got get quiet a few more players but its looking much better so far. Good job coach Pry and Staff.

Go look at average bowl attendance that was the high end on a bad weather

Vandy/ Ga Tech had like 34,000 at their bowl game but go google bowl attendance and you will see above 30,000 is well on the high end. We all know the weather, roster churn and season wore Va tech out to a degree but to still produce those numbers is good. We have spoiled Charlotte because of our usual turn out. This portal stuff and transfer will only hamper bowl attendance. I thought it was a good night but some might be right move it back to the Friday night between Christmas and New years would be better.

Bud Effect ?

We all know from the old Va. Tech days Bud was often talking about going 3 deep in player positioning. 2 was the baseline and 3 was the goal. Wonder if this is what we are seeing, someone saying you need to get deeper in regards to player pipeline. Or is it falling this way because that is what available.
