Posting History (197)

Wow, that was the WORST match

McGowan never even came close to a shot. Same for Lilledahl.

So glad to see Van Ness lose

Valencia took it to him from the opening whistle. ACC!! Would love to see Penn State lose every finals match!

Thoughts on Gaj, Eddie, and Seidel

Gaj - I don’t see him redshirting next year. I see him at 157 with another All American campaign, could win it all. What a great season! EV - great season but a little disappointing at the end. Not sure a 6th year at 125 next year is a great recipe for success. 125 is a tough weight to make, he may regress a little. Seidel - Next year Seidel stays at 133 and Jax goes up to 141. Jax looks like he could end his career as high as 149 as he fills out.

Not a great tourney for the ACC in general

Only 3 semifinalists. Trumble, Valencia, Seidel Hokies doing well this session, though! We are 5-1 so far.

They could win 8..

…definitely not winning 141 and likely not 285 Could win the other 8 weight classes…..

My rankings of the one seeds…

In order of most likely to NOT make it to the finals: Welsh - a ref will finally not give him a generous call Jax - Seidel ends his run in the semis Lilledahl - 125 is always a crazy weight Van Ness - he wilted in the spotlight last year, majored by Lovett Bastida - he’s opposite Trumble so may make the final but I think Trumble takes him Levi Haines - he’s so lucky to have beaten Bryce twice, but 174 is a little weak this year. PJ Duke - he looks very strong, not sure who can challenge him Messenbrink - pretty much a sure thing to make the finals Barr - can’t imagine anyone beating him, but maybe Sonny has some magic for him. Mendez - don’t see anyone beating him

I was thinking this same thing…

My mind went to: β€œyou can’t win by 2 in SV, has to be by 3 (TD) or 1 (penalty point e.g. stalling or hands to the face)” Then I thought of your exact scenario of a 2 point stalling penalty. Too funny.

I think the seeding committee was fair to slightly generous to VT

We have 2, 4, 25, 4, 14, 25, 25, 14, 4, 16 seeds. One head scratcher, though. Mullen #16 with Pitzer at #20

Something just isn’t right with NC State

(1) they had 3 weights that were complete disasters all year, not worthy of their brand: 157, 184, 197. Never seen them with such huge holes in their lineup. (2) they didn’t bring any impact wrestlers in from the portal. Redding and Brophy underwhelmed bigtime. (3) Fishback left them high and dry at 184. VRob regressed, Ryan Jack disappointed, Arrington disappointed due to injury, Will Denny collapsed at ACCs. Even Singleton appears to have regressed…I would not bet on him to Podium at NCAAT. (4) Last year, Orine and Ed Scott had terrible senior seasons. Trumble is the lone bright spot and he will likely make the NCAA final, maybe Buesgens is a bright spot, too. Court is still out on him. Something is just off in Raleigh…

Way too early NCAAT seed predictions

Eddie - 2 Seidel - 5 Crook - 26 Gaj - 8 Miller - 13 Church - 25 Sergio - 19 Bullock - 17 Sasso - 5 Mullen - 16

It is all but clinched now. We are up by 14.5.

Stanford would have to win their 3 remaining finals by pinfall to beat us.

Now we all Love Jared Haught!

Sasso is gonna be a top 5 seed at NCAAT Wins over Merrill, Novak, Stout, Posada

We are up by 10.5 on Stanford

88.5 to 78 No one else can catch us In the finals they are favored at 157, 197, 141 We are favored at 125, 133, 165, 184 We wrestle them at 125, 133, 157 We win 125, 133 it’s over. It’s going to be close!

Team Scores after Round1: from FLO

VT 13 Pitt 12.5 UNC 12 Stanford 11.5 UVA 4.5 NCS 4.0 Duke 0.5

In terms of team potential:

VT has 9 in the semis Stanford and Pitt each 8 NCS 7

Singleton looked rough

…got the win barely. Has a brace on his wrist

Lineup next year…

Henson looks a little small to me for 157 but he just killed it at 154 (70 kg) at Zagreb so now I’m thinking crazy thoughts! Crazy to the point where I think team would be strongest like this: 125: Ventresca 133: Dillon Campbell 141: Seidel (he looks big for 133 already) 149: Bassett (I think 141 would be a tough weight cut) 157: Hitman 165: Collin Gaj (looks very big for 149 already) 174: Burton (has the frame to wrestle 174) 184: ??? Transfer 197: Sasso 285: Mullen We would have top 10 guys at 6 or 7 weights, top 15 at every weight save 184 Again I’m going crazy overthinking next year.

Way too early ACC Tourney #1 seeds

125: Ventresca (VT) 133: Seidel (VT) 141: Simcox (UNC) 149: Gaj (VT) 157: Cardenas (Stanford) 165: Denny (NCS) 174: Singleton (NCS) 184: Dailey (UNC) 197: Stout (Pitt) or Posada (Stanford) 285: Trumble (NCS)

Match thoughts:

125 - Robinson has yet to score a TD on EV in 4 matches. EV wins for a 5th time at ACCs 133 - Seidel is just unbelievable. Can’t wait to see him make a run to the podium at NCAAs 141 - Jack is not wrestling well this season but he handled Crook for the 7th time. Good on Crook, though to keeping it to just a decision 149 - Gaj just keeps getting better and he is an absolute Hammer on top. 2 straight matches he has avenged losses in wins over top10 guys. Huge, dominant win by Gaj over a strong opponent. 157 - Miller understood the assignment 165 - Denny is having a very strong season, so not surprising it was a close loss despite Burtons MD in their early season first match. Burton will learn from this but maybe he’s 174 next season. He’s big. 174 - match MVP ought to go to Sergio. Singleton is no joke and he was 2 seconds of riding time away from forcing SV. Great match by Sergio 184 - I thought Bullock wrestled well in a very critical match. Great ride for the victory. 197 - Sasso will let anyone in on his legs. Not sure what his strategy is. But boy he gritted that out after being down 10-6. Hope he can grow on this one. 285 - Trumble is putting distance on a lot of guys. He’s really tough and likely is in the finals at NCAAs this year. Mullen is still figuring things out at heavyweight.

For NC State it all started going sideways last year….

Robinson surprised as a National Champion and Singleton and Trumble placed but Orine and Scott disappointed bigtime while Arrington and Jack redshirted. Then come this season Fishback transfers out, Arrington got injured and they have major holes in their lineup without the depth to fill them. They are hot garbage at 133, 157, 184. Next year we are going to beat them 30-3. They don’t have many hammers in the pipeline. They might place a little above us at Nationals this year but it will be the last time for a while. We are starting to put some distance on them.
