Posting History (179)

What do you have to say about experience and maturity (part of retention)

If we can't get the 5* guys here because we're not in Miami or LA, how do we get the 3/4* guys to stick around so we can win with experience. A lot of those same 5* guys that want to chase the money and big cities also want to go to the NBA ASAP. Can you coach up a team that has 4+ years of experience to win a championship? What are some good examples of that, and how do we accomplish it?

Funny concept. If an ACC team beats more ACC teams, then the ACC deserves

more of its teams in the NCAAs. As long as the ACC beats up on each other in just the right way, we get more teams in. I guess that's what happens when most of your schedule is in the same conference.

I wonder how much of this is to appease their fanbase

Remember when we were winning 10 games every season and people complained about how boring our offense was and we should fire our OC? Things were going well, and we still wanted more. Just generally, I wonder if winning isn't enough. People want to be entertained, and you need to pass to be entertaining. Or not...I'm probably wrong on this one. Regardless, I agree...stick with what's working for you until it doesn't.

You keep making this Fortune 500 comment. Why is that an accomplishment?

I'm not doubting that they have a good job. I have no reason to doubt it since I don't know what it is. But being at a Fortune 500 company is not in itself an accomplishment. It just means they work at a big company. Doing what? For what pay? If they're a janitor (sorry to pick on janitors) at Apple, that's not a great return on their LU investment.

Do you have a source for Einstein? It's just factually inaccurate.

Please provide a source for the claim. I found a very biased source in favor of creationism that still refutes the claim around Einstein. Edited to remove some opinions that don't belong on a football message board. Just here to set the record straight. ** Edited by Hokie622 at 1/3/2024, 8:49:43 AM

Google is a search engine, not a source. But if you're looking for a great

source for quality investigative research, you should probably start your search here.

Ok but "quitter" has a connotation to it.

Does our team losing on Friday make them "losers"? I certainly hope you don't think so. They lost, but it was atypical. They're not "losers". We all know what it means to call someone a quitter. That's what people are reacting to. Did he quit? Yes. Is he a "quitter"? No.

Yeah I thought that was interesting too

I mean, it should be that way until you get to the extremes...but it's still cool to see it.

Yeah, the data agrees with your point.

I posted them to add to the discussion, not to agree or disagree with you. Honestly, I think that's why you're confused about what we're discussing. I'm not trying to argue. I'm just adding info to support the discussion. FWIW, I think it does agree with the point you were making, especially with the context you shared (0.07*68.4 = 4.8 "defensive handicap" points). I think I slightly misinterpreted your point initially. The clarification you put in this reply was interesting. Let's just go with that next time and maybe avoid the insults. Whether it was directed at me or not, I don't think it's warranted. I don't think anyone else in this thread was confrontational and deserving of being called a "dum-dum" or "hopeless". I'll get off my high horse now. It was just a bit much this time.

Here's some data.

Looking past the insults, it looked like your point was that we had lots of close games, so a few extra points due to better efficiency would mean a significant shift in games won. Yes, I agree. I adjusted the score of every game by "defensive handicap" to take a look. This is just a few extra points added to VT's score for every game, assuming that's the result of better defensive efficiency. I know that's an oversimplification, but it's relatively easy and good enough for discussion. I ignored games that became a "tie". I also through in a "threshold" column for what constitutes a close game, just to look at sensitivity of the 7-point number you chose. Anywhere from 4 to 7 is pretty similar in most cases. Interestingly, or maybe uninterestingly, anywhere from 0 to 6 "defensive handicap" points still keeps us at around 50% record in close games. The number of close games drops though. Probably some interesting tidbits about our competition in that data. Most relevant to your point would obviously be the effect of "defensive handicap" points on the overall record. I have no idea whether this effect is particularly high for us vs any other team or any other year. Allow fewer points -> win more games. Is 9 close losses particularly unusual? I don't know. Signing off...I'll come back later if there's a more constructive conversation to be had.

Can we just have a discussion without it becoming an argument?

I hear what you're saying, and we could have an interesting discussion about it, but it's not really worth it. Every one of your post seems like you're trying to pick a fight. I appreciate your thoughts, but it's almost not worth engaging because it will inevitably turn into an argument. I'm not sure if your comment below was intended to be about me, but I'm actually quite good at statistics and have built a pretty good career around it. Calling me "hopeless" seems a bit much.

We also won 9 games by 7 points or less

I'm not disagreeing with your sentiment, but that particular statistic is misleading. We lost and won and equal amount of games within 7 points. I sounds like you're saying two things in your post: 1 - The record makes us look worse than we really were, and fans were overreacting, since lots of those losses were close 2 - Lots of those losses (and the defensive efficiency associated with them) were a result of injuries Overall record: 19-15 Close game (7-point) record: 9-9 Not-close game record: 10-6 So I guess you can say that we performed better in blowouts than tight games, but that should always be the case when we have cupcakes on the schedule. If we remove the cupcakes, we basically won as consistently in tight games as not-tight games. So, I disagree with your first point. The opposite argument is equally plausible. But, on your second point, yeah...we were worse, and we'll be better if we're healthy. ** Edited by Hokie622 at 8/26/2023, 11:20:10 AM

Not a country fan, but I looked him up

Per Wikipedia: In March 2022, Church was heavily criticized by fans for cancelling a then-upcoming April concert in San Antonio, Texas, in order to watch the North Carolina Tar Heels play Duke in the NCAA Championship Final Four.[47] In response to the criticism, Church announced a makeup concert in New Braunfels, Texas, for the date of September 2, and justified the cancellation in a follow-up interview stating, in part, "To win that, it was a wild week or two. It was just something I had to be there, and had to take my boys ... I can’t recreate Duke and Carolina Final Four." I can respect that.

Agreed mostly on the Paterno thing.

In the case with Paterno, one person became such an ingrained symbol of an institution that his faults or misdeeds would be perceived as a problem with the institution itself and make supporters call into question its merit (and by extension their own judgement). People who are heavily invested in that institution are willing blindly support its leader/symbol, against their own better judgement, instead of doing the right thing. It's not just there...it's in many other institutions that I won't get into because I don't think it's appropriate for a football board. I'll just say for myself...PSU is a big reason why I've become less enthusiastic as a VT fan...I recognize the danger in that kind of culture. Anyways...Go Hokies!

Great point

I was meaning more NCAA tournament champs, but yeah...we def has something to celebrate there. I think it's feasible we do it again under CMY. Probably likely.

This is the most interested in VT basketball I've every been

I enjoy rooting for this team and the coach. They're easy to root for, they make me proud, and they're better than VT's historical average. The solution is easy. Just enjoy it. Don't let championships determine how much fun it is to be a fan. If you do, your life as a VT bball fan won't be very fun.

I would guess just as GC described above. I assume his knowledge comes

from Beran or people close to him that would know. Just saying, people often use the Americanized pronunciation of their name, not the original. I'm one of them.

Sure looks that way, as do I! Looking out for his financial future

and your statement are not mutually exclusive, but luckily he feels good about his future at VT, so it doesn't matter!

That matters very little in bball. Half of the teams in the final four were

mid-major. Five of the Sweet Sixteen. And not just as Cinderellas...as a 1-seed even. Gonzaga was a 3-seed, playing in the elite eight, and that's an average year for them. Where was LSU? Being in a "good" conference matters much less than Gonzaga's consistent performance in the NCAA tournament.
