what happens if they have no subs left, but GK gets hurt or red card?

Do they have to take someone on the field and put them in goal? I imagine if GK gets red card but there are subs left, they sub in GK for someone else and play with a man down in the field along with their backup GK? Watching last night, it looked like Mexico had a guy hurt on the endline where they were shooting, and (I think) that had to finish the last few minutes with 10 players. I didn't hear the announcers address that piece but obviously it was hectic non-stop at that time.

Where to watch Balogun and his teammates tonight - Newport Beach edition

My 18 year old daughter and her friend (no shuns) are in Newport Beach this week after graduation. I'm trying to help them find a good place to watch. I think there's some Newport Beach residents here? Surely some others familiar with the area? Any suggestions? They are staying at grandparents' house, which is near Balboa Pier. I'm guessing with a 5:00 start and big game some of these places will allow <21 to come in and watch, but I can't tell from websites.

I do remember I had already received the real copy from DMV on test day

old-timers will remember "Part A of a two-part license" that fit neatly into a little clear plastic piece. One part was photo, the second part was a green tri-fold with dot-matrix printing. Many people talked about going to DMV dumpsters to get that paper and print their own. Kids today have no idea how hard it was to get a fake ID in the 80s and 90s

my daughter was incredulous when I told her about my 1987 licens FFX county

I didn't have to go to court, but there was a large "ceremony" at Marshall high school for students from all over the county. I don't even remember if it was a judge or someone else leading it, but I do remember my old-school father telling me it was effectively a court proceeding so I had to take off my baseball hat...

this idea has absolutely crossed my mind, esp spread over four years

if one vendor is better than the other(s), I'll buy from there even if it's an extra $200. I'm just trying to figure out (mainly) whether there's a benefit of buying at college bookstore compared to apple site.

The Lounge 2 mo ago

thank you - did you buy from Tech or from apple site?

if it was my own computer, I wouldn't put much thought into it, but seeing as I'm the first phone call if something does go awry, I'm trying to do whatever will be simplest. Her major is business/political science, so there's no hardcore computing requirements

laptop question for freshman (of course it will be a mac)

my daughter is heading off to school. After years of reading this board, I know she'll need a mac and (possibly) some monster cables. what's the best place to buy a macbook? not so much price, I can compare those myself, but is there a benefit to buying from her university bookstore vs. Apple vs. Amazon / Costco? Prices vary by $100-$200. Bookstore seems simplest in case she ever needed tech support, but that's also $200 more than Costco/Amazon for the same computer...

Thx - it would seem to me that the guy that paints could also do this ?

I supposed I'd have to buy the materials, but it should save me some money on paint? From pics, this is applied by hand rather than with a roller, so probably an increase in time. Or I could do myself - I need to try to figure out how long it would take me. And of course I have to convince the rest of the house that this is better than painting.

question about brick on the front of a home

I've got an older house, split level, the main and lower level have a brick front, with siding on the upper level. My wife wants to get it painted, which I'm fine with b/c it's been at least ten years. She also wants to paint the brick, which I know has been a topic here in the past. The brick is probably original, and has faded over time a little bit, and she's looking for a light gray. I'd love to keep "brick color", but I'm outvoted b/c of the way ours looks. In other houses in my neighborhood, the brick looks newer and nicer and is a darker shade of red. I think all these are original, I can't imagine someone replaced all the brick in the front. It does get sun all day, so I'm sure that contributes, but is there something that could be done to "refresh" my brick and make it look a little newer and darker? I'm probably destined to have it painted, but this got me thinking.

I listened as a middle schooler in the mid-80s. I loved his show

This was before sports radio - I didn't even have ESPN so I was dying for sports fixes. I'd call George Michael Sports Machine (362-4444) for scores, and get more info from Beatrice at night. I think it was like 10-12 or something on weeknights at WMAL in DC? I remember the classic " I don't eat french fries... but I hear they're very good...." and this was when a number of people still thought professional wrestling was real, so he would get up on a soapbox to tell them (politely) that they were idiots.

answer + some other things I've learned

I'm pretty sure she was "early action", or whatever Tech calls it these days. It was non-binding and she submitted late October? I'm not sure whether Tech just punts the waitlist people in to the Regular Decision group and decides based on that entire pool, going by the number of students that accept. I don't know the exact date, but I think she learned early-mid January? I think Tech deadline to accept is May 1? I told her she may go into May/June without knowing for sure, and then possibly get notified then that there's a spot for her. At that point, she'd have to decide and we'd lose the deposit somewhere else. Most schools (including JMU) have that May 1 notification deadline for accepting and deposits. College of Charleston apparently gives students that accept an early jump on housing preferences, so there's incentive to accept (with deposit) earlier. And good luck to your daughter - I'm sure it will work out wherever they both end up. ** Edited by Dan1993 at 2/11/2026, 10:22:16 AM

The Lounge 5 mo ago

thanks all for insight - this is similar to where she is now

she got in to JMU, but isn't real excited about it now. There's this school of thought (apparently common in Fairfax county at least) that everyone goes to JMU, so it's not that exciting. I think it's a great school and disagree with that, but other parents I talk to say their kid felt the same way. Some were so sure they didn't want to go there that they didn't even apply. As much as I like Tech, for her, I don't think it would be that different from JMU. She's had good luck with getting into her other schools, but isn't excited about them. The other one she really liked was Providence College, where she also sits on the wait list. I think Providence would be good for her due to smaller size and interaction. Selfishly I like in-state, and I try to stress that even with a large school, you can find your niche and make it seem much smaller. Like any parent, I want her to be excited about where she's going, and be happy and successful there. The after-graduation pieces can be addressed down the road a bit - all of these schools have good opportunities if the kids work hard and take advantage.

The Lounge 5 mo ago

thanks - I definitely think you're right on enrollment

also many years ago, UNC rejected me outright, I think mainly b/c I'm out of state. At the time, it seemed like UVa went the other way - I felt like if I was a comparable student in North Carolina rather than Fairfax county, I'd have gotten into both schools. I didn't even bother with UVa b/c I thought it was a longshot and not worth the effort to apply. Tech had headaches a few years ago with admitting too many people and not having space. Looking online, I see the waitlist admissions vary widely in the last few years, so I'm wondering if there's anything else to do or if anyone else has suggestions.

The Lounge 5 mo ago

question about Tech waitlist

My daughter applied and was notified she's on the waitlist for college of arts and sciences. The school says that there's nothing really to do that she can differentiate herself at this point. Her grades were better in the 1st semester and did raise her GPA, but the rest is the same. Does anyone have any experience in this? Would it be helpful to go on a tour to show interest? She's been there a few times, but never on an official tour. She'd go if she got in, but it's not like she's dreamed of it for 15 years. Of course I'd be happy as both an alum and the guy that writes the in-state checks....

Update - other dad called me and we agreed he'd file claim

I submitted info through usaa web site, indicated that it's not my claim b/c both parties agree other driver was at fault. He was going to talk to USAA as well, so we'll see what happens next. I believe his claim will cover my rental as I have rental insurance, and should cover all repair costs and any deductible for me. thx to all for input, back to drinking heavily...

The Lounge 6 mo ago

from quick research, car is valued at 6-8K, so hopefully cleared on that

I don't know much about repair, but it seems like it could be done without replacing the bumper - just sand out the scrape, repaint, and re-attach. I do have rental coverage through both my policy and (hopefully) his, as I've had to use that before. thx

The Lounge 6 mo ago

thx - should have mentioned my car is a 2015 Camry.

it looks great and runs well. I don't really care about cars, so (knock on wood) I'll keep this one as long as possible. It's worth far more to me than the USAA appraised value. I wouldn't be able to replace with comparable at that price...

High school parking lot fender bender - insurance question

yesterday, another student clipped my daughter's car in the parking lot. Both cars faced forward to pull straight out of spots Other driver was parked next to her, on the driver side As other driver pulled out, she turned right, but cut it too hard and clipped the front driver side My daughter came out a few minutes after, but other driver still there and said what happened - no doubt about who was at fault as our car was legally parked at the time - other driver and her father agree with this. Damage seems to be mostly cosmetic to front bumper. Scrape, and knocked of a piece of front spoiler that was part of bumper. No dents or damage to lights, but bumper got pulled out of attachments, and hangs down a little bit. I pulled back up so it's almost flush again, but it will have to be re-attached on that side by someone more skilled than me. I talked to other dad last night - nice guy, concedes that his daughter was at fault and wants to make it right. She was driving on older car, and no damage at all to hers - just a smalll scrape on the side, but he says barely noticeable so he's leaving it as-is. Both of us have USAA. He mentioned trying to get it fixed without a claim, which I think will end up costing him more. Questions: Should I tell USAA now, knowing that he may come back and say he wants to pay out of pocket? I don't want to take it all over for estimates, and I definitely don't want it fixed by a fly-by-night place that does all repairs for $195. I want it to be a certified shop... I don't know what his deductible is, but my guess is they'll come back and say I need a new bumper b/c of some BS reason, and it will be at least $1000. I'm writing from a MAC, I have no pictures of drivers (shun!), and I drank heavily last night... thx

Organic alternatives to TruGreen or Weed & Feed?

cutting my lawn last night (about one hour job - standard suburban lot) made me realize how next door neighbors weeds are slowly taking over. I used to use TruGreen, but my wife is concerned about pets/kids/environment. I've used Weed & Feed spread in the past but apparently that's bad too. (insert line here about my other vices) Anyway, does anyone have any alternatives? Ideally something I could spread myself, but I'd use a company if the only option was a spray treatment for the whole yard.

filling out tax forms for summer job for 16-year-old

My oldest child (don't even think about shun) is working her first job this summer that will withhold taxes. What's the best way to fill this thing out? Standard teenager, she's a dependent of my wife and I when we file our taxes. she'll make maybe $2500 this summer working as a camp counselor. She's got some other gigs throughout the year but will earn at most $3500 over the 2025 tax year...

Tools to track subscriptions?

I just got notices for renewal of Amazon Prime, Amazon Music and Netflix, which got me thinking... I see ads for tools/services that will show all active subscriptions to help people get a handle on them and cancel as needed. Are there any recommendations? I used Mint years ago, but that's gone away, so maybe there's something similar that has that functionality across the board? (Mac, monster, heavily, etc...)

some good 2BR condos right around line between KDH and Nags Head

We've stayed in one for a couple of years, but haven't been in about three. I can't remember company - maybe OBX Realty? From Google satellite, it looks like address of building is 2115 North Virginia Dare Trail / Highway 12. There's maybe 12-16 units in the building, controlled by different management companies. It's right on the beach, easy walk to dining and other stuff. I think it's a great area. Maybe they rent for a few days in off season, but if not, check VRBO. There's some condos and houses on highway 12 just north of where I'm talking about. I think some of these are VRBO.

Book recommendations anyone? Brad Thor?

I've read a couple of Scot Horvath books over the years, and just finished one (Dead Fall) that wasn't bad. Any other recommendations from the series? Or are they all pretty much the same? I'm a fan of the genre so I've read the Mitch Rapp/Gray Man/Orphan X books, but never really Scot Horvath.

The Lounge 2 y ago

right- my strategy is shoot for any open look inside "Corner Kick" distance

I can see where staying onsides could be a challenge sometimes, but I feel like they'd be able to fix it. Maybe the other team would be able to convert more of those to runs the other way? i have no idea... They pass it all over the place when they get close to the goal box, and end up turning it over. They're happy to get a corner kick. Just blast something similar to a corner from the field of play, and send your guys to the goal. in addition to more scoring chances, it would be a hell of a lot more exciting.

The Lounge 2 y ago

I'm convinced they need to just start cranking shots-equivalent of 25' 3s

I don't know much at all about soccer, but I feel like this would at least get the ball into play near the net and create opportunities off deflections and rebounds. As it is now, they try to pass it around just outside the box until they turn it over. I think they had four shots on goal going into extra time last night? Continue trying to make the long runs, but once those don't pan out, just fire it towards the goal and hope for something.

USAA and probably other banks/CUs have a car buying tool

fill out the info, they'll shop it for you and get back to you with quotes. I believe the dealers know that you came through (USAA or wherever) so they'll honor those prices.

Consolation game for 4th/5th grade volleyball league

Final four is set. #2 vs. #3 play Sunday at 2:00. #1 vs. #4 is at 3:00. Commissioner proposed "Consolation Game" at 4:00, followed by Final at 5:00. Am I an a$$ for wanting to scrap the consolation game? Games are all at one site. Most people live within a 15 minute drive of this school. My team plays at 2:00. If there was a line on the game, we'd be an underdog. Cancelling consolation game obviously means everyone finishes one hour earlier. I know it's a kids game, and kids like playing, but if we lose semi, I don't want to have to wait around an hour and play the consolation game. I'd rather not play it than play, win and finish 3rd. Playing and losing the consolation game would be even worse. I'm cynical by nature and obviously the coach, but I also feel like most parents would trade that consolation game for some of their Sunday afternoon back, especially after a long season.

Indoor mouse trap suggestions?

Watching hoops tonight and I see one scurry across floor in my downstairs den. I’m already drinking heavily and asking from my Mac. Any other suggestions?

I'm an east coast guy, but feel the same way about DET, CLE, PIT & Columbus

spent a weekend in all four over the past several years. 1st ever in Detroit, Cleveland and Columbus, and first visit in about 20 years to Pittsburgh. I was pleasantly surprised by all four.

The Lounge 2 y ago

do they still do the M/W/F or T/Th schedule?

I'm a couple of years older than you, but had the same three-hour credit courses at Tech. Regardless of meeting day, you had 150 minutes per week in a three credit course. If they're now worth four credits, do they meet any longer? I'd assume the argument is that they cover more material with an extra class period, so they're earning the extra hour of credit. But if they're just giving away an extra hour for the same time, that seems off. The school would ultimately lose money, but it would make the kids feel better... More than the additional credit for the same work, it seems like it would be making it easier to earn a diploma unless they raise the graduation requirements. I think mine was 120 hours? Rough estimate is I could have graduated in three years (with maybe a couple of CC courses in a summer) if I was getting four hours per class.

Best apps / books / tools for high school students to search for colleges?

in the mid 80s I had a book the size of a sears catalog, ranking schools by "most/highly/somewhat/less/non" competitive... It was great as everything was in one big book. what are the best tools for students in the college search now? Basic admissions info, plus other facts about schools and current tuition and fees. Google search seems to bring a bunch of sponsored sites and apps, so I'm hoping to get some feedback from someone that's not a paid sponsor.

roughly how many gummies in 3784 G?

my experience ended before the gummie explosion, but about how many is this? I imagine they come in different sizes? In any case, that's a whole lotta drugs. I'd expect some other arrests to follow a the police look closer at the distribution network. ** Edited by Dan1993 at 4/5/2024, 2:11:14 PM

How does this work in terms of their academic progress (muffled laugh)

I feel like for football players, they're anxious to get settled at new school for start of Spring semester in January. But for a hoops player that enters the portal in March, does he/she finish out the semester at current school? I suppose scholarship is through the end of the current semester?

SpotHero in DC for weekend event at Convention Center - yay or nay?

Will be downtown for a volleyball tournament this weekend. Coach is talking up SpotHero, but I've never used it. It seems like it should work, but I'm concerned about communication between the app and the garage attendant. Thoughts? Alternative would be to find a garage the old fashioned way, or worry about finding street parking and then the meter. The event is massive so parking near there is always an adventure.

The Lounge 2 y ago

IMO,'bring' implies you're going there anyway. 'Take' is a specific reason

You're going to the drugstore for other things, bring your prescription. If the drugstore is a separate errand along with liquor store, HDMI store, and Apple store - you take your prescription to the drugstore.

Def - I bought my wife's Apple Tablet from Costco for Christmas '21. ;)

I can't remember the specs on it, but it's plenty for what she does. I think it was $500-$600.
