The coast guard academy wasn’t super hard to get into.

I had the grades and the act score and the letter if I wanted it. West Point, the navy and the Air Force academy were hard to get into. The coast guard academy was not nearly as hard at the time (late 80s). I have no idea if it’s hard to right now. I had a 34 on my act and it was well above their average at the time. Based on what I just googled it appears their selectivity is still well below the other service academies.
