As I understand it, the MCL doesn't maintain the potential energy that an

ACL does. So if it tears, it doesn't retract like a broken spring ... like an ACL. It's strictly a stabilizing ligament and isn't involved/needed in physics of bending the knee. So if it tears, it's like cutting a rope. The muscle tissue that it is woven in keeps in place allowing it to reform. I am with you, though. I/we have been conditioned for decades that surgery is needed when a ligament tears. hard to get past that mentally.
