Well, the idea of a pitching 'staff' has, predictably, gone by the wayside.
No blame here, just the reality coach's rhetoric pre-season was wishful thinking. He's very lucky that Carrico sort of came out of nowhere as she has. One never knows who's going be effective until they are (there are many great bullpen pitchers!). Right now he has two reliable arms. Teams have won natty's with two (even one). The only other candidate is Layton. Hopefully she starts today (no reason not to start her) and she has a good outing. ** Edited by MidloHokie at 3/22/2026, 7:57:32 AM ** Edited by MidloHokie at 3/22/2026, 8:00:08 AM

I don’t think Carrico “came out of nowhere”
her bio on Hokiesports says “Ranked as the No. 48 overall prospect in the class of 2024 by Extra Innings Softball.”

True. But these rankings aren't really worth much (I could sight . . .
. . . numerous examples). You never know if a kid is a D1 pitcher until she faces D1 competition.

she's from Appomattox. I'm sure the coaches had "eyes" on her

Yes, I'm well aware of where she went to HS. And, of course, the coaches .
. . . 'had their eye on her'. They signed her didn't they? All that said, the majority of scholarship pitchers are only moderately successful, at best. Look around the country this season and point out how many true aces there are. Expand that to true #1's and you still have a pretty short list. Bree's not there yet but she's closer than the vast majority of her peers.

Mazz and Bree are very good compliments to each other
Mazz’s control (or lack of) will take us far (or keep us from our ceiling) Bree has average velocity but she has a ton of movement Mazz has both elite velocity AND movement…which I’ve said before sometimes isn’t in control and gets her in trouble

I think you’re selling Layton very short. She’s had some ups and downs
But she’s also shown a very high ceiling too. Her relief outing vs PSU was one of the best clutch innings of the year

I've stated numerous times I think she's the third piece to the puzzle.

Actually, that comment made me a little nervous...
I kind of read it as needing to work everyone in b/c VT doesn't really have a stopper and you really need one elite pitcher no matter how good your hitting is. That is, this was going to be a pitcher developmental year. Not to worry, those pitchers are showing up, maybe I got it completely backwards, Pete knew he had two or three solid pitchers and really could describe it as a pitching staff or, of course, repeating you here, you don't really know what you got until practice starts and someone like Carrico appears: "developmental" year over, let's play ball. ** Edited by `lag at 3/22/2026, 9:54:20 AM

Pitching is everything
Especially in the post season of course. It was funny … I wasn’t able to make our game yesterday so was watching the ACCN broadcast, and after NC State got off to a good start the announcers were going on and on and on about how NC State had come out with a renewed sense of purpose, their coach had challenged them or lit a fire or whatever, and they had made all these adjustments etc etc And look I’m not trying to be critical of the announcers here, that’s a tough job for sure and I imagine it’s hard to keep thinking of interesting things to say … but the whole time they’re heaping all this praise on NC State, I’m simply thinking that … No. This isn’t a case where NC State made all these successful adjustments. Rather, they are simply going against our #4 (ish) pitcher instead of our #1. And then boom Bree comes in (who I view as coach’s #2) and shuts them down for the rest of the game. Pitching is everything. Hopefully Mazz and Bree can keep it rolling and Layton and Fish continue to develop!

It's called 'fastpitch' for a reason. I'm putting 75% of any NIL $$ . . .
. . . I have in the circle.

Yep. Thought the same thing. I turned down the sound. Announcers
Drive me nuts anyway. They were fine, they weren’t annoying like some but they feel like they have to say something and just make stuff up in the moment. A common practice. This is happening so this must be why. They missed the why. Yes they looked fired up. They were getting on base.

They make stupid comments, like calling home plate a dish.
